My dad has a big pair of locking, slip-joint pliers (with 5 possible centers). They're awesome. You can get the jaw around pretty much anything, and lock it.
Does anyone know who makes these, or where you can get them?
I'd like to get a smaller pair for regular carry.
My dad thinks they are made in France.

I found them. They're made by Facom, a French company supposed to be the leading maker of hand tools in Europe. The jaw opens to about 4.5" for the farthest joint, which is impressive for pliers that are just 10" long and not very heavy.

I've seen waterpump pliers with a sliding ring on the handles to lock them on to things -- is that what you're talking about? Or is it something I haven't seen, maybe with more grip than that?
