lockup problem - advice needed

Hey guys, I need some assistance please. Yesterday I received a beautiful custom knife (Tac 10 series 1). I was shocked to see that with the knife fully open and locked, I could close it easily with moderate hand pressure on the back of the blade. No need to "whack" test this one. This is the most unsafe folder I've ever seen.

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? Can this be fixed easily? This is a beautiful knife and I'd prefer to keep it fixed rather than return it. I'm a rookie, so any advice is appreciated.

Thank you,
Bill

If it is not a used knife, send it back, The maker or dealer you got it from should see to it that it gets fixed. If you try to do it yourself and still can't get it to work correctly you most likely will have to pay to get it fixed. If it is used then the guy who sold it to you may or may not stand behind it.

BIll, Send it back to the manufacturer and let them service their warranty. Explain the problem in detail so they can get it right the first time. It may be a design deficiency that needs to be addressed in the current assembly line. You'll be doing other buyers llike yourself a favor.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear, nobody likes to return a product. But, the only other alternative is to take it to a custom maker and have it repaired at your expense if it's even possible to repair it at all.

Thanks guys, that sounds like excellent advice! The knife is an awesome working knife, it's brand new and unused so yes the maker should stand behind it. The seller has offered to take it back (a true blade forums gentleman!), and tomorrow he is providing me with the maker's address and phone number. I'll make sending it back for repair my first option. I don't care if it takes two months as long as it comes back safe to use. Thanks again.

Les Robertson had alot of input on these knives as he worked with all of the makers of the Tac 10 series. They were all sold through LDC Custom knives,All makers are reptuable and Les is top notch.
Contact Les Robertson at Robertsons Custom Cutlery,he may be able to have it repaired quicker than you or I due to the relationship he has with the maker of your knife.

WHICH KNIFE WAS IT[WHO WAS THE MAKER?] WAS YOUR HAND GRIPPING THE KNIFE AND PUSHING AGAINST THE LOCK WHEN IT FAILED?

Knowing Les and the makers he works with this will not be a problem that will go unresolved.

Thanks guys, I have a call into Les to ask his help getting me in contact with the maker (CH Morris LDC-2).

Bladelaw: I gripped the handle in such a way to avoid contacting the sides of the scales during this evaluation. The liner slides easily out of the way with only a modest closing effort. In the open "locked" position, I see the liner is only partially engaging the end of the blade. I'm thinking the liner needs to be shortened slightly to get a more complete engagement.

I have to say, though, the LDC-2 will be an awesome knife once this issue of risking your fingers is cleaned up. I love this design.

BILL; I AGREE. THIS KNIFE IS A REAL "SLEEPER" THAT DOESN'T GET THE ATTENTION IT SHOULD,PROBABLY BECAUSE MORRIS ISN'T KNOWN FOR MAKING TACTICALS. THE FIT AND FINISH ON MINE ARE EXCELLENT AND IT HAS A GREAT FEEL IN MY HAND. THE LOCK ON MINE JUST ENGAGES THE BACK OF THE BLADE ALTHOUGH THE LOCKUP IS SOLID. LES WILL DO RIGHT BY YOU.

Bill: Your problem appears to be more widespread. I went home last night and gave my LDC 2 a light "spinewhack". Same problem. I also have a call into Les.

Bladelaw,

I'm sorry to hear it, I was hoping mine was the only one with this problem (the repair line is shorter!). Good thing you checked it to avoid nasty surprises. So far I have no response from Les or CH Morris. PLEASE share the return address with me and let them know two knives are coming - I'll do likewise if I make contact first. Les has been away for three weeks so he may be a little slow responding.

Thanks!
Bill

Bill: Some time back I spoke to Les about Morris and was told because of health or family problems he wasn't making knives at the time. I don't know what the situation is now until I talk to Les. I will keep you posted.
