Hello everyone!

I've decided to get my first axe. Something in the line of Fiskars handy 600 or Wetterlings 13" wild life axe or Wetterlings small hunting axe 15" I just need (quite) small, easily travel axe (something I can put in back bag or carry comfortably in belt), that can do fire wood. So I won't need to take Becker BK7 and baton it every time I need to make a fire.

I think having Small camping axe and combine it with Busse GameWarden is pretty much everything I need for camping and such. Any insight would be nice about size, brands etc.

I live in Finland so Fiskars are abundant and Wetterlings are quite easily obtained and Granförs Bruk are also obtainable, though bit harder.

I would push for at lease the small hunters axe. A little longer handle..

i have a small forest axe and i find it just right i think i would find that anything smaller would often be too underpowered for what you plan on doing with it, i would suggest looking in the 18-19" range mine still fits in most daypacks

I went for Fiskars Handy 600, which is around 15", plenty for hikes and making firewood without need batoning Becker BK7 or any other knife. I went Fiskars as it was cheapest now as I am with tight budget, I might upgrade later with Wetterlings or Gränfors Bruk.

I did not liked the feeling of fiberplastic Fiskars used as axe handle (I'd prefer wooden handle but since I am on tight budget as I said, I can't be a real nitpick), so I "pimped" axe bit to make it more comfortable by using paracord:

My next plan is to regrind axe bit to make the bite bit larger and convex edge when I have time. Fiskars was 30% cheaper than Wetterlings and nearly 60% cheaper than Gränfors I could find.

I tested Fiskars and 15" was quite ok for me. I could use it with both hands if necessary as well single hand. Its quite versatile and made firewood so much faster and cleaner than my Becker BK 7 and I can also carry Fiskars 600 with belt thanks to belt sheath it came with if necessary.

Its my first axe, I'll see where this leads :D

Looks good.....Have fun !

I had already today. I sharpened axe with 2000 grit sandpaper and mouse paper method and today firewoods for camp fire were done less than 5 mins, when it took 3 times longer with Becker BK7.

go for the wetterlings, now that gransfors bought them if anything they will be getting better.
19in over the 15. You can always choke up but the extra 4in will still fit in a daypack and adds no weight for 30% more leverage.

I have and use the same size Fiskars that you just bought. Great little axe in my opinion!

I also convexed mine with sandpaper, it's a heck of a chopper for its small weight and size.

That's a cool cord wrap job you've got there! Try it out and let us know how comfy it is. -I just wrapped some cloth grip-tape around the handle of mine, and I'm pretty happy with it. :)

That really, really depends on the size of your daypack.;) There is no way the Wetterlings 15" ,never mind the 19", will fit in my Maxped Jumbo.

The 10" does just fine.:)

BryFry: it works really well. Cord with 7 innerstrings (550 paracord) absorbs nicely shocks and my hands won't get slippery on it, like on some woods or on plastics. Its working really well.
