Looking for a light

Well, I "need" to get some sort of new gadget or I'm going to go crazy. Since I already have more than enough knives (and since I can't bring any of 'em into my dorm room) I thought I'd get a flashlight. I've only heard good things about Sure-Fire lights and the E2 Executive looks really appealing to me right now, but I'm open to any suggestions. I'm looking for either a 1 or 2 cell light that is bright. I don't mind too much about burn time, just as long as it's bright and the beam is nice and focused. Would the Sure-Fire Executive series give me that? How do you turn those things on? I don't see a button anywhere. Are they fairly easy to carry/are they very big? If anybody can answer some or all of my questions, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Once you've touched the Surefires, nothing else will really seem bright to you anymore. So you might want to start with some of the less bright LED lights. :)

I'm going to damn you forever right now, and give you the link to:

Now you're lost. :) Don't spend too much time in there! There's some really exciting stuff going on lately with Surefire's new LED bezel releases, and that's putting the pressure on Arc Flashlights. Inova also has a pretty good product, the Inova X5T, which only costs $40 if you find it cheap.

Surefires, will their modular design, have a great amount of expansion potential. I have a Surefire E2e, 6P, and an Inova X5T, and I plan on modifying the Surefires with add-ons to tweak them exactly to my liking.

Those Surefire LED bezels look really, really, really cool. Luxeon star LED's, fully regulated, run for hours, pyrex lens, bad@ss heat sinking, Hard-Anodized type III finish. There's a version that will fit most any Surefire that you can get, so you can switch between BRIGHT incandescent or bright LED with longer runtime. Check those out.

For a first flashlight, I would get an E2e. Pocketable, bright, hard finish. It's small enough that I can carry it every day, no matter what kind of pants I happen to be wearing.

The E2 and the E2e both have tailcap switches.
Push for monetary on -- twist for constant on.
The E2e has the lock-out tailcap meaning that you can unscrew it one complete turn and then it can't be turned on accidentally and drain the batteries.
The E2e also has an upgraded lens and pocketclip.

Another 2 cell light worth considering is the Streamlight Scorpion.
Same basic size and brightness as the E2 (it's a little wider in the body and even more wide at the head) but its rubber shrouded aluminum and it comes with a clickie switch in the tail -- lightly push for momentary on and fully push to "click" it to constant on. Click again for off.
The rubber shroud makes for good gripping and easy pocket carry.

The Scorpion has less bulb life but the Scorpion bulbs are also about 1/3 the price of the SureFire bulbs so it might be a wash there.

The SureFires definitely have the edge for craftsmanship and accessories but for focus and output they're pretty evenly matched.

I agree with GJW the scorpian is as good a light i think as the surefires and bit cheaper now days. The switch is what I like better about it, although I did melt a lense on mine becaue the switch got turned on while it was in my holster on my belt. The surefire might be a little better built but I doubt enough to make and diff. the lithium batteries these lights use are kind of high if it's a light you are going to use much you will be replacing them often. Might think about a Surefire rechargeable, a little bigger but worth it if your going to use the light much. Still high priced flashlights though. For cheapness of the light, cheapness of the batteries and durability, the Mini-mag light still wins this contest, doesnt have the super high power these lights do but for most everyday uses it's just fine.

If you don't want to spend money on a quality flashlight, guys at www.candlepowerforums.com will help you find a cheap flashlight that will still be able to blow the miniMag away.

I suggest you check out CPF

I could find nothing about this on www.surefire.com If these things are near to shipping, they're sure keeping them a secret.
