My girlfriend and I are going up to her family cabin for a few days and as it is a rare opportunity for us to be outdoors for fun since we moved to Chicago we got some things to take with. We picked up an inexpensive bow and some arrows and will make a target out of stacked cardboard, and a cheap Frost Cutlery Bill Dance Outdoors "hatchet" to throw. We both thought of bringing some throwing knives but will be unable to get them before we leave unless we find somewhere in Chicago that sells them. I had thoughts of making a set of six or so out of bar stock from home depot. I figure I'll get a few pieces and some paracord and a dremel and make some throwers to play with.
Does anyone know where I'd be able to purchase throwers in or around the chicago, milwaukee, or kenosha areas before tuesday?
AND
What are some specs for a beginner thrower if I were to cut a few out of flat steel stock. I was thinking six or so inches long, one or so inches wide 1/4 inch steel stock. I wouldn't grind edges onto it, except at the point and I'd probably wrap the handle in bright paracord to help locate it. I'm not looking for something perfectly balanced just something to play around with in the woods and not worry about losing. I think the Bill Dance axe-like object won't last very long.
I was also thinking about picking up some inexpensive fixed blade knives like the small winchester hunters that a lot of sporting goods stores carry and using them as throwers, again, they are easier to locate than dedicated throwers and would keep the cost low if they broke or were lost.
I have a set of three multi-colored handled Othello? throwers at home that are small, light, and double edged and a set of 3 larger bud-k style throwers but they are 1000 miles away. I'm thinking of modelling the ones I make on the Othello of Solingens.
thanks
pete
