Looking for Wife Knife

Hello All

I'm looking for a nice traditional, not too expensive, for my wife. She's not a knifey person, per se, but she does want a nice looking one for her purse. She borrows mine on occasion, but wants her own. I'm looking for some ideas.

We spent some time looking the other day together. Here are some findings:
* She digs abalone (who doesn't?) and "pretty" knives.
* She doesn't mind if it locks.
* She has weaker nails than normal, so no GEC.
* She does not like browns, stag, or ebony.
* Size would be blade length around 2 1/2" and overall less than 3.25".
* Number of blades is not so important.
* Steel type doesn't matter to her, but matters a little to me because I'll have to sharpen it.
* She's okay with pink.
* AND last but not least, she doesn't like bolsters on both ends. "Looks like a toilet roll dispenser." :D That stopped me short. Her eye really picks up on the bolsters if there is one on either end. They have to be small/discreet and lots of pretty between them if there are two. Go figure.

Ideas? And please don't say that I should give her the one that she keeps borrowing. It's a nice knife, but she wouldn't want it for her own. It's black G-10.

My wife carries an SAK Tinker.
So does my daughter.

Well, technically Vic classic is a lobster pattern. Vic Classics have some nice scales. VERY useful tools. Won't break your heart if she loses it.

I do believe that GEC does an EZ opener in Abalone.

For a "non-knifey" person, you might take a look at the Rough Riders.
If you search on the auction site, they have a lot of different styles and scale materials. Easy on the pocket too..
I've never owned one, but the reviews from folks here seem to be very good, especially at the price point.

I have some small Frost toothpicks I don't need. If you're interested I'll snap a photo tonight when I get home.
Aqua blue, pinkish/red something or other. Don't remember exactly.

No charge of course. :)

I'd also have to suggest the GEC EZ-openers. The spring really isn't too stout, and between that and being able to easily grab the blade, they're ideal for folks with weak nails. I got one for my wife, and she really likes it.

Got to contradict about the GEC E-Z opener I have, its spring is as macho as the regular stuff! I don't mind, but those with a sensitive nail would.

Barehead eh, no toilet roll holder look....

If you want to spend a lot then get a Moki small lockback in crimson bone, VG-10

If you don't want to spend much the Rough Rider is acceptable and I notice they do a lot of pink knives lately. Something in acrylic might be a good idea. Was going to suggest a CASE Mini Copperlock in blue, the American Workman series. Nice&slim but it has double bolsters.

CASE Swayback Jack in Bermuda Green bone, that's Barehead and easy maintenance stainless.

In all the years Karen and I have been together, she's always settled on just two knives in spite of how many I had 'accumulated'.

First and formost, is Karen's Vic classic. It's her everything knife, and she uses it for things that I cringe at, waiting for it to break or blow up or cause a distruption in the space/time contineuam. And she likes how it's so small and cute she can use it anywhere. Just the other day we're at the movies and she's getting down in the popcorn bag. Rather than keep reaching in all the way to the bottom, she takes her classic, pulls out the sissors and trims off the empty top half of the bag. Like most women, she loves having sissors on hand. It opens all kinds of packages, boxes, and peels her orange. At one time I've seen her use every one of the tools on the little classic, and she even took it to Key West for her cousins reunion. The fact that it comes in all kinds of pretty colors and translucent hues is even better. Now her sister Diane has a translucnt blue, and her friends have got into the classics. Women seem to love them.

Her other knife for several years now has been a number 8 Opinel that had hearts all over it from the factory. Karen loves hearts, so I gave it to her one Valentines day, and it gets carried a lot in her purse for things the little classic is too small for, like food duty. If your wife likes natural wood grain, Opinels are available in some nice Olive wood, and walnut.

You might try Canal Street's ring opener, no nails needed. Just twist the ring to open. It's 3" closed and has a pen blade and a file, both in A2 steel.

Ok, this is my suggestion. The first knife I carried and used all of the time was a Case Pen Knife with Scissors. You don't have to go with the mammoth ivory of course, but its a great little knife. All of the little knives that I can think of that I like have bolsters on both ends. Pen knives are great because they have a slim profile if she wants to carry it in her pocket, and will ride great in the small zipper pocket of her purse. This knife will give her an option to use the scissors or blade. Good Luck!

Well, you guys have at least put my mind at ease that I'm in the right areas. Believe it or not, as they say, I had narrowed the search down to the ones mentioned on AG Russel's site (she likes the larger version) and the Rough Riders, among others.

2Brothers- I really appreciate your kindness, but, alas, it isn't a style she gets into. Thank you for the offer, though.

I'll look for the GEC EZ Open in abalone, but I have a feeling those are pretty scarce.

Maybe a nice Queen D2 Copperlock in abalone?

Hmm. I'll let you guys know how we go.

Maybe yours is stronger than the one I got my wife, but the spring on hers is manageable for her, and she has weak nails. I do know that being able to 'pinch' the blade open instead of using a nail nick.

SCHRADE MODEL 206 BARLOW KNIFE. Schrade USA 206 Barlow with Delrin handles and scrolled bolsters. Knife is 2 3/8". Seems to fit the bill!

Maybe this little Rough Rider imitation Abalone Sodbuster with no bolsters. Pretty and inexpensive.

Well, I went with a couple Queens:

And, shoot, as long as I'm ordering knives, I got another amber stag from myself.

I'm pumped!!!

Thank you for all your great suggestions. If you want, keep them coming. I buy more knives than I should. ha ha.

My wife just took my latest red bone peanut.
Here is one with abalone scales;
