Lost Boyscout in Utah

MANILA, Daggett County — Boy Scout Jared Ropelato, missing near Daggett Lake since about noon Friday, was found safe Saturday morning.

"He was found approximately 8:40 a.m. A search group on ATVs found him down by the Long's Peak area," said Karen Peterson, public affairs officer for Daggett County.

The 12-year-old Scout spent the night in a lean-to he built to shelter him for overnight temperatures in the 50s. After searchers found him Saturday morning, "He was taken down to our (Emergency Medical Services) command post and checked out with a clean bill of health," Peterson said.

Family was also there to greet him. "He had a huge amount of family there. They all gathered there. There were a lot of tears," Peterson said, adding that officials did not yet know how Ropelato became separated from his troop, from Hooper, that left the Spirit Lake trail head Thursday to hike to Daggett Lake.

Peterson said about 200 volunteer searchers joined about 30 professionals in the search effort, which began organizing Friday afternoon.

Looks like he used his Scout training. What a great little guy. Glad to hear he is safe.

Small survival kit should be part of everyone's gear. Have at least the following: Compass, waterproof matches, knife, paracord, H2O purification tablets, garbage bag, quart size ziplock bag (holds water to purify & drink), whistle & a couple Clif bars. Glad to hear the boy is safe & didn't let fear control his actions.
