Hello,
I'm trying to deside between the Lum and the Starmate. Can anyone give me their opinions on these two great knives? I know I'll probably end up buying both, but which would YOU buy first? Thank you.

This definitely falls under the category of personal taste, and it is just that, personal.

Anyway, I own a Starmate and have handled a Lum and carried a buddy's Lum for a few days and here are my observations: First, the Starmate is an awesome general purpose knife, it will do most anything required from opening boxes to cutting frozen chicken with ease. The CPM440V blade really does keep a keen edge for longer than a comparable ATS34 blade, at least in my opinion when compared to a ATS34 Spyderco Military I have knocking around. Second, the ergonomics not only look pretty interesting, the knife really fits my hand. Other's mileage may vary, but the handle really sticks to my palm and is comfortable to use for extended cutting sessions. Third, after four months of HARD use and a few resharpenings, my Starmate looks new.

As for the Lum, didn't care of the handle shape much. The steel is ATS55, pretty sure, and was never as sharp as the Starmate. The one I handled in the shop didn't lock securely. My buddies did, but only after a week of breaking it in. He carries it daily and the titanium scales look like hell or maybe he is just hard on the knife. Cutting performance is not on the same plan as the Starmate. Blade profile looks awesome, but leaves much to average cutting utility.

Bottom line, Starmate is the best Spyderco to date in my opinion and more knife than the Lum. BUT get out and handle both yourself. Personal taste.

2 x STARMATE: 1 serrated and 1 plain-edge...

Depends on your taste and your use. The Starmate is a much better using/casual knife. The Lum is far dressier, and it's the kind of knife that you hate to mark up.

The LUM owners speak up....LOL. I agree with Brian_Turner. The Lum is a classy dress knife: it would go nice with a suit, and is NOT scary looking. The ATS-55 is a snap to sharpen up - you can get it hair popping nasty with little effort IMHO. I like how the handle feels. The Starmate is a nice general use knife with super nice blade. The handle on the Starmate has a good feel to it, not the same warm/fuzzy feeling i get from the Military.

Different knives for different occasions. Both of these knifes in PLAIN blades is a little tough to get a hold of (more combo blades right now).

You just can't own ONE knife can you>!? LOL....I wish. Both are worth owning.

Hello all,
I have a Military and know how good 440V is. That alone makes the Starmate the first choice.

I'd still like to hear from anyone who has two cents to throw this way. Thanks for the good advice.

StarMate! My StarMate is as close to a perfect pocket knife as I have ever seen.

Scott - If your planning on getting them both anyway...I would get which ever one I could find first. We are having a difficult time catching the back orders on both models.

Well FWIW, my main daily carry knives for the right pocket are:
Carnivour
Military
Starmate
Wegner
I trade off every few days or so.

Please note that 3 out of 4 are Spyderco's.

The Starmate is an honest to goodness knife user's dream come true as are all of the Spydie's I've mentioned.

The Carnivour is passable but it's main forte is defense.

The Spydie's are, as Nemo puts it, polyvalent.

I haven't handled a Lum yet, but I'm sure that when I do, I'll end up buying it. Never met a Spyderco that I didn't like.

Why do they sterilize needles used for lethal injections?

Misque - Thanx for the support. The Carnivour is a nice knife. Both Bob (Rekat) and the Crawfords do a nice job.

I just received a Crawford made Kasper fighter. Very nice piece also. Of course, mine has a hole & teeth.
