E, Someone wrote about this some time back . The just of what I recall is the M9 PHROBIS stamp was for the military contract . The firsts. Then later the others bearing the civilian stamp. I've held some of the PHROBIS II & III and they are substantial knives. A great truck knife . I see bikers with them. As for worth -- I've not followed them . The ones at my honey hole (pawn shops) near military bases had 50-75$ on them. No box or papers . DM

Thanks David, I need to go to your honey holes... My son wants way more for his... I just want one in the box... ITE ... :D

I had wondered if they weren't like that. I should have bought that last PHORBIS II I found. DM

I found a few on the bay both Phrobis and Buck 188. The sold price ranges from about $100 (Used) to $355 for a NIB. These price are only from the last 2 weeks. It should help with a ball park price.[/QUOTE

Thanks Longbow, I see them on the bay all the time too, But never with just Buck 188 USA on one side... The ones I see have Phrobis on one side and Buck on the other side... Anyway I'll keep looking... Thanks again, ITE

Next time David... I'm not in to Bayonets, just want two for my collection, maybe three... If it didn't say Buck on it, I wouldn't even buy one... But, I do get a few Bayonets in my collections I buy sometimes... ITE ... :)

Ok, next time if it has Buck on it I'll buy it for you. These do not fall within my collection parameters and someone may as well get it. The ones your showing have a 7" inch blade, I've seen the 5" as well... DM

David, that's ok about getting me one... I'm getting one from my son and his wife in a trade... I was just trying to find out what it's worth, for we could make a fair trade... ITE

E, Looking back thru my catalogs for you. I found this model with the black handle and 'Buck' stamping in the 1987 catalog with this statement. " The new U.S. Army bayonet is a lot more: it's a great field knife now
available to the public. The great blade by Buck includes handy emergency saw, and works as a wirecutter, too. It comes in rugged sheath." This eludes to the fact that it was not available to the public for sometime prior and now has a different stamp to boot. Hope this helps. DM

Then I found the two models, 188CB and 188BK in the 1989 catalog with a different description and offered for sale at $171.98 . These two models still appear in the 1994 catalog and I noticed yours is a 97. DM

The older ones are stamped Phrobis and Buck on the tang... Phrobis on one side and Buck on the other side... I would like to find out how much they are worth today... I see some like my sons on ebay sell for $100 - $130 in the box and some for more... But they all have Phrobis on one side and Buck on the other side... His doesn't have that... Anyway thanks again... ITE ... :)

E, Thats what I was telling you in post #10 its the black one stamped 'Buck' 188BK . As for selling price I don't know. DM

Yes, I understand this: what I'm saying is we're talking about 3 different model numbers,(not date code) 1) PHROBIS (the early one), next came the model 188CB (silver blade and olive handle), third model 188BK (BK the black one standing for black oxide blade) which came along in 1988 or 89 . Both these last two had prices of $171.98 . These last two also have the Buck 188 USA stamp with a date code. DM

Thanks Dave, I wasn't looking for retail on them... But it's good to know... I was just trying to find out what they sell for today... Like I said, I see the ones with phrobis on the tang all the time on ebay... But I have not ever seen ones like these on the bay... My son think they might be worth more... I don't know if they made a 100 or 10,000 of them with just Buck 188 USA on the tang... Thanks again for your help... ITE
