Mad at my Maxx!!!

Since I purchased my Maxx it has become my favorite EDC over my 710hs,630, Chinook II, and Greco Falcon. It holds a great edge carries real well as thin as it is.
What irks me and it is my own fault is that it eats my pants (well, pant at this time). I placed a low carry clip on it and love how it rides. unfortunately the flippers can contact the openings of your pocket and cause it to open slightly. It bit my hand the first time when I pulled the knife out of my right pocket and went to place Maxx in my left hand. Due to the open blade I did actually place the Maxx in my left hand. Luckily just a minor cut. As sharp as I currently have the edge it could have been much worse.
I thought an easy fix would be to carry it in my left pocket. This solution seemed to work until yesterday. I go to put my 501's on this morning and realize ther is a small hole in the left hand side of my jeans just in front of the seam. I pull my pocket out and find there is a 1 1/2 slash in my pocket. GRRRR. These were brand new 2 weeks ago. I can only guess that the handle moved forward away from the blade allowing the blade to cut my pants.
Better my pants though than my leg.
Unfortunatley I will either need to go back to the carry clip that came with it or only carry it in carpenter style pants with the side pocket on the leg.
So the moral is be careful if you have the low carry clip or you will become holy.

Make it tip-up. Problem solved! :D

bad idea.

i own the maxx 5.5 stiletto. make it tip up, and the next time you reach into your pocket the blade goes into your hand.

I've got a converted Maxx Bowie and I've never had a problem.

Properly carried this would be impossible since the blade would be at the back of the pocket preventing it from opening.

It's not safe to carry a tip up knife anywhere that the blade is not supported by the seam of the pocket.

My Maxx eats pants too. I will get converted to tip up soon. I have never had a problem with tip ups. Unless you are carrying the knife wrong, I dont see how you could cut your hand.

When I got cut it was because the low carry clip allows the flipper to contact the seam of my pocket and allowed it to "reverse wave" (my TM pending) open slightly. This is why I moved it to my left pocket hoping the seam would keep the blade in but the handle was able to move forward slightly while the flippers kept the blade perpendicular to the seam of my pants. Tip up would more than likely solve any isssues as would using the factory clip.
Tightning the pivot is a two way street as there is no free lunch. If it is to tight it doesn't open smoothly or requires a high amount of force to flip it increasing wear and tear on the knife. Too little and opens to easily. I am at the happy medium and place the fault on my low ride clip that puts the flippers below the seam line. I love the way it rides and how well finished the low ride clip is,I just don't like replaceing pants.

Well Chad, I wouldn't say impossible. I do agree it would greatly reduce chances of it happening.

I am not a big fan of tip up carry for safety reasons. I have sliced my finger a couple of times with tip up carry. I do prefer it for easy access to the knife. It's a trade off for me.

With the Maxx, I don't like the deep pocket clip because of the flipper getting caught under the edge of the pocket. That happened once when I was pulling the knife out and I received a nice little stab from the tip. So, back went the original clip.

However, my motto on this and other sharp pointy things, know your knife. Know what it will do when carried in various ways and deployed by various means. Just because you can carry it safely in your pocket under one circumstance, doen't mean it will be safe doing something even a little different.

Knowledge is a good thing to know.

Keyser Soze, sorry if I wasnt clear, but what I meant to say was that with tip up I dont see hot you could cut your finder. On the other hand, my Maxx, which is tip down, has poked holes in several pairs of my pants.

this also happened to me. i installed the deep carry clip, and within 2 weeks, i had poked a big, gaping hole thru the right front pocket of my Dickies. man, i was pissed. i didn't see this as being a problem with the original clip.

i've got another Maxx on the way, so i think i'm gonna try sticking with the factory clip for a time, and see how she plays.

Okay, impossible is an overstatement in most cases. But I still can't see how someone can cut themselves when properly carrying a tip up knife.

Even if the blade happened to open a little bit you're not sticking your hand in on the side of the blade. (See illustration)

With that said, I feel a tip up knife should have a strong detent, an axis lock or lockback to be completely safe.

9 of 10 of my tactical folders are tip up and I have never had a problem with one.
