Mad Dog users?

Ive wanted to try a Mad Dog for some time now, and have a couple on order but they wont be here for awhile :grumpy:.

In the mean time, is there anyone with pics of their user Mad Dogs they are willing to share? Also, for those who own and use any of the larger models, have you had any problems with chipping along the edge? 62 RC seems a little high for most steels that will be used for any heavy chopping.

It's been a while since we've had an episode of the good old Mad Dog flame war....

Are you implying that I'm trying to start a flame war, or that MD threads degenerate into flame wars?

I can assure you the first is not true, as I am purchasing two models (ATAK, Kodiak) regardless of what others "say". I do like to get other peoples opinion on knives, but the only way to truly KNOW for oneself is to experience first hand use.

With that said, I hope to see some cool pics as well as learn a couple things more about MD knives in this thread :) .

I don't think that anybody is starting a flame war- but few topics around here get the feathers flying faster than a MD thread. Prior to your posted sign up date (sep 02) there were a few doozies. Do a search & you'll see. It's just a bit of a hot button for those who have been here a while. Very Fine knives and people are very passionate about them.

Mogmz,

Try your query over here: www.tacticalforums.com

There is a Mad Dog Knives forum there. Plenty of stuff to search through. I think there were some field use pics.

The hard edges on Mad Dog knives are what they are, tool steel at almost full hardness. Makes them a bad choice if you want to smash up cinder blocks, but they hold an edge pretty well on things that people tend to cut day to day. I've done a fair amount of chopping on hard woods with different Mad Dogs, and had no problem with the edge chipping. They aren't high-alloy stainless blades, after all.

ATAK and Kodiak are kick-butt knives. I will be placing an order soon, once I figure out what model is best for my needs.

The ATAK is pretty cool. MAD DOG makes a killer handle that fits my hand perfect. Just a bit over priced for the type steel he uses IMHO.

;)

I have three Mad Dogs...I carry them but I don't cut with them....from what I have heard though, they stand up to abuse quite well.

Here are a couple of pics gleaned from the Net (again, not my knives..sorry, don't know the authors)

I use a thin grip Pack Rat farely frequently for camping and backpacking. I noticed a verrrry small chip out of the blade while touching up the edge (to remove discoloration) after a campout last weekend. It seemed to have gone after going over the blade a few times with the 600 grit stone of my Edgepro Apex and polishing it up with the ceramic tape (3000 grit). I like the knife, however the thin handle is just a bit too thin for extended hard work. I also think that while MD makes extraordinarily ergonomic handles, the texture is slighly too smooth. I like the Pack Rat, but I think I am going to try a Busse as my next fixed blade. I also like the no questions asked warranty that comes with Busse, which is more likely to be put to use with a larger blade. However, having owned a Pygmy Atak (I sold it, too chunky for me) I will tell you that the regular size MD handles felt simply fantastic... even if they are a little slick. One last thing, I have found that with a fairly acute edge angle (shaves arm hair easily), the edge retention is great for the uses I have employed it for.

Steve Harvey: Thanks for the link, now I know where the MD crew hang out at.

RL: Cool pics, I love seeing high quality custom or semi-custom knives being used like they were meant to be .
You own 3 and dont use any for cutting?! Cmon man, thats like buying a Porsche just to enjoy sitting in inside your garage ;).

Sesoku: I will probably put a convex edge on mine as that is what I do with my user blades. It might not shave hair quite as easily(will still shave though), but the Busses and others I have done it to can chop all day long without hardly noticing any decrease in sharpness at the end of the day. As for grips, I do not have access to any MD's so I couldn't try em out. But from pics and what others have said as yourself, they are pretty comfortable.

If it's any consolation, I used to own a Porsche...and I drove it like it was meant to be driven :)

Here's another pic....this time with Mad Dog himself...

Tactical Forums is the place to be to discuss MD knives.Mr. Mad Dog will be more than happy to tell you have great his products are.

While I haven't handled Mad Dog yet, I"ll tell you I was excited about Busses until I got my Steel Heart. The handle is too thin for me. I can't imagine myself working with it for a longer period of time, especially chopping. It felt much better when I had gloves on though. Mad dog handle looks more comfortable just by looking at it.
My 2 cents.

Who's the one who has a tree in their apartment?!

I had an ATAK Hunter a while back. The handle fit my hand like a glove and the blade grind, fit, and edge were perfection. Problem was it also fit the hand of a Special Forces (Green Beret) Captain I know who was on his way to Afghanistan, so I gave it to him. BTW, he's over there again, second tour! If he asked for any other knife in my modest collection, I'd give that to him also. I wouldn't have given him my MadDog if I couldn't trust my own life with it. You could do lot's worse.

:D I didn´t even notice there was something odd about that pic. If only my girlfriend would let me have some trainingstuff like that in our apartment. :p

The ATAK is my favorite fixed blade carry ! And I carried one, as my duty carry (utility fixed blade), for a number of years. Beat the hell outta the thing and it never failed me. The ergonomics of the ATAK is the best of any fixed blade that I've handled. Never experienced any chipping of the edge, tip, etc. . .

You won't be disappointed ! :D

mogmz. . .you've asked some very valid questions that deserve a response. Don't worry about the flame war BS ! Those threads, the ones in the past, were allowed to degenerate ! Besides, what's true of the past isn't necessarily true now. . .nor in the future. ;)
