Well, after a LOT of work, I have completed the Madpoet Tribute page I wanted to make. So far it has all the knives that have been pictured on Mel's website. It also has some additions by Howard Wallace (his custom kitchen chopper) and Wade King (Mel's buddy who gave me access to the pics). There are some neat rarities to be found.
I still need to add my own pictures of Mel's knives I own, and I am waiting on some photos from Sing og his Campset. I will hopefully be getting a hold of two more Madpoet knives very soon, both of which are said to have VERY rare Kydex sheaths and one of which is probably the only Loveless style hunter that Mel ever made. I will be taking photos and adding them to the page as I receive them, so if you have stories, photos, etc, to send me, please feel free to at any time. Now that the basic formatting is finished it won't take much time to get new additions up. Unfortunately this page is a Geocities page, so I had a choice of annoying pop-up commercials or annoying banner commercials. I thought the annoying banner commercials were the lesser of two evils, so I went with those. Please do your best to ingore them. Thanks, and please give me some feedback as to what you think, what I could do to improve the pages, etc. I would be very appreciative. A few of the pics are not good quality, but for the most part whoever was doing the photography for Mel's website did a fantastic job, so you should be able to enjoy the pics. Also, there are as many different patterns shown as there are knives (Mel did not use "patterns" but rather freehanded each and every knife), a lot of great pics of various woods, and some great ideas for mixing various scales and bolster combos. Check it out and please post your feedback here. The URL is: http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Lab/1298/madpoet/main.html

Thanks!

Well done.

Excellent, Chiro75

Thanks. The world lost a great craftsman and artist.

I'm sure that Mel feels honored, I only met the man once, this summer at a show in Missoula, MT. He was great, took time to talk while I looked at a folder he had there. I wish now that I had purchased the knife.

I had wanted to pick up a couple pieces from the auction, but they were well above my means. Oh well. A picture only does so much, though, as handling one of these knives shows how much Mel understood the ergonomics of the hand and what makes a GREAT-feeling knife. I have a lot of people promising to send pics, so I'll keep posting updates here as I update the site. There are currently 7 pages of pictures with more on the way. I estimate that there are probably close to 70 pictures total. If nothing more, take a look at the page to see all the possibilities of great patterns and wood-on-wood scales/bolster combinations. Mel's work is breathtaking in its simplicity. Thanks for looking, guys!

Chiro 75,
Nicely done, a wonderful tribute. Just some words that I think about often are:
"What does it all mean, what do I want for myself, what kind of achievement am I seeking, what have I got to give, and in the end, what will I leave behind?
Seems like Mel knew the answers.

Steve,

Beautiful job! I and other Madpoet fans appreciate the work.

I didn't know Mel other than occasionally crossing paths on BFC. I'm glad I got to see his work--it would have been a loss not to see some of those Persians and especially his beautifully simple utility designs.

BTW, Chiro, do you ever get down around Macomb or Peoria? I go to Monmouth College which is not far from I-74 about an hour or so SouthEast of the Quad Cities. We get on 74 at Galesburg.

Gwinny, I go AROUND Peoria frequently! I have family I visit a few times a year in Champaign, so that takes me past Peoria. It's faster to take the 474 around town. I have a friend who is from Peoria. I have a cousin who lives there but we haven't gotten down there to visit him yet.
I'd like to get down to Jubilee state Park down that way because of the mountain biking trails there, but I am too busy during the week and I work on weekends and invariably have to study on Sundays. My schedule is totally packed! When I start seeing patients in the main clinic at Palmer you can come up for a visit, an adjustment, and we can talk knives and stuff, too!

Good Job Steve.

The pictures I promised you are on the way via USPS (left yesterday morning),

Thanks again,

Waldo

Hiya Chiro!
The layout of the page looks great!
One minor point....
I don't know about everyone else but for me, the galleries take a bit long to load.
Have you given any thought to thumbnails?

In any event, thanks for pointing me to another place where I can get rid of some cash.

Sing, no need to email the pictures. I can grab them from that site really easily. I will add them soon! Thanks!

VampireGerbil- I do not know how to thumbnail stuff. I tried to keep the pages to a minimum, and I do not have access to picture editing software and the like because I am using public domaain computers. This is the best I can do! And, I don't know if you were kidding or not, but you won't be spending any money on Madpoet's knives unless you find them used. He passed away a couple months ago.

Very nice Chiro,

I only regret I didn't have a opportunity to buy one of Mel's fine knives while he was with us. I really did like his persians a lot.

Thank you for assembling this fine collection in his memory.
