Let's see some Hawks. I love em. They are a great break from knife making as they dont crack in the quench. That seems to be all i'm able to do lately:mad:. Anyway please post some purty pictures. And if you havent made one, make one by Monday :D and show them then. Who's up for it?

Howdy Mark!
I bought that book, "The Flowerpot Crucible Furnace" by Lionel Oliver the 2nd, and man is it a great little book! I been savin up my brass scaps for years and I'm gonna use the lost wax process to cast some brass hawk/peace pipe heads using one of these little flower pot deals. You use charcoal briquets for fuel even. Anyway, I'll post some pix for ya when I make em. Won't be this weekend but I'll make em!:p
Hey, this reminds me, I need some leg bones!
Any of you hunters wanna donate the leg bones that you normally throw out from a deer, elk, wildabeast, moose, gazelle, muskox, caribou, yak, water buffallo, bison, gemsbuck, kangaroo, giraffe, hyienna(pardon the spelling), grizzly bear, black bear, polar bear, panda bear, koala bear, no wait, koala's legs would be too short, well you get the idea. I need some leg, or arm I guess, bones to use for the shaft of my peace pipes and any and all donations would muchly appreciated!!!Shoot me an email if ya got some and we'll work something out!

I'll take it I.G.!!!
As long as the meat has been removed anyways.
Man would I hate to get a package like that in the mail, whew!

Mark, I've got a reverse twist ( kind of like a chevron pattern) damascus spike hawk in the works, its all heat treated but needs cleaning up. Damascus caps put on the handle and inlay in the shaft. But it won't be done by monday, sorry.

Bill

Dang Bill, you got me all excited. At least throw up a picture of some of your past beauties.

I've been out upsetting a bar of 5160 that I got from Crex. Been swinging a 6lb hammer I got at Trackrock for a bit and my shoulder needed a break, actually I'm done for the night. Whew.

OK Mark, here's a damascus one I made for a customer last spring, the bottom of the blade has been sharpened to help it keep from hanging up when being pulled back.

Bill

Hey Mark, thanks for reminding me.
I'm in the process of making my first 'hawk and if I don't finish it soon, Dave is probably going to drive out to PA and strangle me. I'll happily post a picture when it's done.

Also, how do you normally attach the handle to the 'hawk head? Like I said, first one.
:D

Way cool Bill, here's one I finished up a little while ago, blade forged from 1 1/8 John Deer load shaft. Deep etched blade showes an almost damascus like grain, curly maple haft decorated with thin leather wrap, copper wire and copper nails to give it that snowed in bored mountain man look I got the idea from Bruce E's tomahawk vidio, and just had to try one.

Looks outstanding Will, but what am I looking at below the wide wire wrap. Did you pull the wire into the shaft or is that wire wrapped over leather all the way down, looks really different in the picture. Makes the handle look like it has wire rings coming down the shaft. Can you feel them. Just curious on how the shaft felt when holding the hawk.

Bill

That's two piece twisted copper wire wraped about 4 times at the top over a leather wrap and spiraled down to anouther 4 wraps, all over leather. The leather jount is nailed together, along with the wire being nailed in strategic locations, to hold the wire and to decorate. The ends of the wire were soldered together and pushed in a small hole drilled in the handle with a nail to hold it. The rest of the handle has nail decorations and are left a little raised for grip. The handle feels good to my hands.

That is a beautiful hawk Will! That's what I was after when I posted about hatchets. Bill's hawk is beautiful but the spike poll makes it bulky and dangerous to carry the way I do.

I really like the shape of your blade. It gives me some ideas to start on now for my new and improved, handle up, walking around hatchet.

After I finish the pictures for the down and dirty wooden sheath, I'm going to forge a few out and see what I can do with them.;)

Bill, is that Aquafortis stain I see on your handle?

Thanks Will for the description of how you wrapped that baby, looks good.

Peter, I made a spiked hawk for myself to carry for bow hunting. We can use screw in tree steps in this state, but at times there stuff to get started, a tap with the spiked end of the hawk in the tree and it leaves a starting point for the steps, they'll go right in. It rides in a belt hanging sheath, very safe and secure. Except every now and then the bottom of the handle might wack you on the side of the knee.
Handle was dyed with fiebings leather dye, and then hand rubbed with boiled linseed oil.

Thanks,
Bill

Beautiful work guys. My striker had to work this w/e so I'm going to be a tad behind on finishing mine:( .I've tried drifting the hole by myself and its a mess.I'll try it anyway so dont be too harsh on how ugly this turns out. Oh I forgot, ugly is what i'm shooting for.:)

Mark

Got a pic of the sheath Bill? Been trying to figure out a decent way to carry a hawk, other than sticking it in my belt.

I'll see if I can get one Will, but all I did was make it like an eye glass case, you know the kind that fold over and snap down. I made the sheath to fit the hawk and then cut a hole in the bottom so the handle would just slide down and though. I took a fairly wide piece of leather and just riveted it to the back useing leather rivets, for a belt loop. The longer wider loop made it swing less when walking/running.

Bill

I think this is one of the Bruce's... I just collect pictures so that I can drool when my screen savor clicks on...:o :D

Outstanding work Bruce,...Uh I mean Bill!:D I think I got the idea on the hawk sheath, kinda what I was figureing on.

..but alas im out of patience and way past my skill level. I thought i would try to make a railroad spike hawk, but instead learned i should have gone to bladesmith school first, talk about tough. The heating and beating is bad enough, but now i cant get the hole for the handle in the thing. someone told me i need a tomahawk drift. What is that and where do i get one or will i have to make it.If so how?Ill completely understand if you guys dont want to help i might be beyond help, but maybe you know of some books or videos i could try..im desperate ill try anything! Thanks .
