What is the minimum,(power) equipment needed to make a fixed blade knife?

I have a 6" grinder, files, a benchtop 8" drillpress, a forge, oxyacetelene torch, and access to a 1"X42" belt grinder.

Is that enough to make a decent fixed blade using O1 steel?

It can be done with files and sandpaper so what you have (which is simmilar to what I have) is plenty.

I figured I had enough, I've already made two blades, but I was hoping some one would tell me I need a $1000 Burr King, so I could show my wife this post and say,"see babe I need that belt grinder to make knives, and think of the money I'll save not going to bars."

If you want to go cheap, get a $1000 Burr King and a mill. If not, get the grinder and a CNC machine. Just imagine all the crazy stuff you could make.

did the wife buy it?

No sale, she's standing over my shoulder waving a 1" stack of unpaid bills. " but babe if I make knives and sell them I can put that money towards the bills"

Gotta go, I think she's gonna hit me with the Edge Pro Apex I bought last month.:D

Oh.....I forgot to tell you, the one thing you will need and don't have is a $1000.00 Burr King :footinmou

It takes DESIRE,Show me a man with desire and I will show you a man who can do anything,Desire is what drives you to your goals.;)

Man, I have 5 files, a little 4" vise, a flea market electric drill and a hacksaw. Knifemaking is 95% skill and 5% tools. I had to drill little holes all around the outline of my knives and then hacksaw them out. Where there's a will, there's a way.
