Manix A Bit Too Heavy for EDC?

New member here but not new to folders or Spyderco.

Currently I own a Benchmade Ares (PE), Spyderco Military (PE), 2 Natives (PE), and a Delica (Aus8) I've had for 15 years. I also used to own a Benchmade 806D2 AFCK (still kicking myself for selling it and pissed at BM for discontinuing it:mad: ) They're all comfortable EDC knives for me.

So I've been looking for an alternative with a strong lock and a "Spydie hole" for easy opening. I really like the new Manix but the weight is my only concern. The weight is making me think I'll reach for my lighter folders instead. I don't want this to be a "safe queen".

Thanks for your opinions and any suggestions.

I recently picked up a Manix (S30V, C$140) and an Endura 4 (VG10, C$60). Both are candidates to replace a Kershaw Blur for EDC.

After a few days I prefer both Spydercos to the Kershaw, because (a) the hole carries more comfortably than the stud and (b) the Spyderco clips are both ambidextrous and reversible. I just finished setting them up for left-hand, tip-up carry. :)

I wouldn't hesitate to carry the Manix but it is much heavier and bulkier than the Endura. Both are lockbacks with steel frames; the Manix handles are G10, the Endura are FRN. The blades are about the same length (and both are longer than the Blur), but the Manix blade is quite a bit wider - it even has a bigger hole!

So I am leaning towards the Manix for jeans and/or when heavier work is expected, and the Endura for slacks or shorts and lighter work.

Either is good, both are better.

I would say a good suggestion for a longer blade might be the police? I have one and really like it, but then all the knives I carry are mostly 6+ ounces so I am a fan of the manix and my skirmish. Maybe the lil temperance as a compromise? Around 4 ounces if I remember and they are really something else to hold. New graham has the S30V models and botachtactical has the 440v ones for a steal...

I carry my manix all the time...no weight problems. Beefangusbeef, I would do some research on botachtactical before you order something from them....many people have had issues.

The Manix is a bit too heavy for my tastes, for EDC. I don't mind carrying it on day hikes, but too heavy for all day long, every day. Especially sumer time. I love the Manix, and it's an awesome heavy duty folder, but the Millie gets my nod for large folder EDC.

I haven't ordered any knives from them, but have ordered other items without too many problems? Mainly knee pads, belts, and the like, uniform items. They were nice on the phone and told me when items weren't in stock. Then again, the items they carry are mainly swat type, and I don't have much interest in sites/companies that cater towards that. I will stop referencing them for that. Thanks for the heads up. I don't think the lil temperence can be beat in the spyderco lineup. If for nothing else than the handles.

The Manix is my EDC, and I don't notice the weight. I actually prefer the Manix to the Military.

Perhaps, I should consider the Chinook II as well? I know its about the same weight but perhaps its a bit less bulkier? Too bad there aren't any stores I know that carry all of them so I can see for myself.

I should have said from the outset I'm looking for another blade about 4" or so. In other words something like my Military but with a stronger lock, hence my futile attempts at getting a Benchmade 806D2.

I used to own a Police Carbon Fiber but sold it because it looked too much like a weapon (to me) and I didn't like the thin tip. Nice folder though.

I like the feel of the Manix, but find it a bit too heavy and way too bulky for comfortable carry. You might want to see if you can get your hands on one of the now-discontinued C83 Schempp Persians. The Persian is about three quarters of an ounce lighter than the Manix, and over half an ounce lighter than the Chinook. It is also thinner, and slightly shorter than either, so it's less bulky in the pocket. The steel bolsters and micarta scales also make it appear less threatening to many people, which can be a plus. Best of all, it's built like a tank. You give up 1/4" of blade length and 1mm of blade thickness, but it's an excellent compromise that balances ruggedness and great looks.

Personal preference, of course, but I found the Manix to be too heavy for my EDC needs. Five days I week and I'm in cargo pants or khakis. The Manix (from the Passaround, Thx Sal!) was something I could do in jeans but just barely. The weight was definitely an issue for me. On the upside, the Manix was INCREDIBLY well built - talk about a solid thwack when you open that sucker. It also felt great in the hand and could have easily supported my using it while wearing gloves.

The mini-Manix is a bit shorter but felt every bit as wide... and nearly as heavy.

I'm really looking forward to the new full-size Calypso!

For the sake of comparison, I also often EDC a 732 Ares and would consider a 710. Other days the EDC is a Calypso Jr., 635, Merlin, & 921. Most of the others are in a less frequent rotation.

I too find my Manix a bit too heavy for normal carry (I use it for big jobs) so I like the Para Military, strong, light, thin. Although, it is a bit shorter than the Manix, I like it a lot.

Too heavy for dress slacks but jeans and kaks are fine. I just got my Manix so time may change my mind.

It really depends on what you do and where you are on a daily basis. I had a Manix for a couple months, and loved it - but it was too heavy and too large for the office environment I work in. Great for weekends, outside, etc.

If you work in an environment where there aren't so many sheeple, it may work for you. If only they made it in VG-10 instead - that S30V chips too easily, and is a b!%$h to sharpen...traded all of them away...

The Persian is VG-10, I think.

You may also want to consider an Ocelot. Lighter than the Manix, good blade length, lockback, VG-10, G10 scales (kinda my favorite at the moment).

The full sized manix is too heavy for me, but more importantly, in my opinion, is too large when closed for me to EDC. As much as I love spydercos, most have their later folders have this flaw where they double their length across when closed. so my little 2 inch blade dodo is wider than my Buck 560C when closed. And my d`allara drop point is probably wider than anything non spyderco.

Ian111 & Snapshot,
Welcome to Bladeforums!!! :)

I have a Chinook II that I EDC on my weak side, left front pocket with my keys and a pen. No problem with the weight, carries great, I have one pair of pants with a small pocket, they are the only ones were it is tight.
But I do carry some heavy folders(Chinook II, Police, Skirmish, 806D2) along with a few not so heavy.

Blades

I didn't mind the weigth or the width but I found the overall size of the Manix a bit unpractical for EDC. I find the Manix 80 better suited for EDC but I usually wear jeans and I try not to put anything else in the pocket I carry my knife in as a rule.

Not that heavy to me...but then again I always wear jeans so that may be why. I dont think its that heavy at all but it does take up alot of pocket space and can intimidate sheeple easily.
