Hello guys, I'm on the verge of ordering my first Spyderco, a Manix and I have a few questions.

My 2 concerns are, Do they all have the stainless throng tube in the handle for a lanyard? I think I have seen pics of some without it and I really want that feature, mostly for looks but also to help keep the lanyard from getting torn up from the G-10.

Second, I have read alot about S30V being prone to chipping, anyone have a problem with that on the Manix? I dont plan on chopping on cinderblocks or anything but dropping the knife, light prying, stuff like that.

Any help would be great, thanks.

No thong tube, the knife comes apart, could loose.
The thong hole will not tear out, the 5/32" thick steel filler will not allow.

I have lots of S30V knives and have not chipped any. I have chipped 440V however.

Prying is not recomended with a knife. To borrow a quote "a knife makes for an expensive pry bar" Spyderco grinds their blade relatively thin so the cut well, not suited for prying. (however the blade is thick 5/32")

I have the Manix, it is a great knife, high quality fit and finish, built like a tank.
The 80MM is no slouch either.

No, their isnt any stainless throng tubes for the lanyar but I dont think the G-10 will tear your lanyards at all. Its a soilid biult knife and you can feel it when you open it.

I own a coupel of S30V knives and some of them chipped when used to stab something but none of those were a spyderco. I have had better experince with Spyderco's S30V than any other companies so far.

Anything that will chip steel is not suitable for cutting. Small isolated issues get repeated over and over ad naseum on the internet, steel chipping and spine-whack induced lock failure being two that plague knife discussions. The manix is a rock solid knife that's great for reasonable cutting chores or MBC.
For abusive conditions get a stryder knife or even better a machete and an entrenching tool.

Hey guys, let me clarify, when I say prying, I dont mean real prying, I mean really light prying. Like using the tip to lift a flat edge of somthing.

Michael Cook, yea I know what you mean. I have just seen some posts about chipping the edge on things that shouldent chip an edge. I dont really have any examples but ya know what I mean.

The deed is done Ladies and Gents, I just ordered a Manix plain edge. Very excited, this is the highest quality peice I've ever had. If this trend continues, getting better knives every time I get one, the wife is going to kill me.

Thanks for your help.

GOOD CHOICE! I absolutely love my manix. Its the only folder that sees pocket time for me and im sure it will see a lot in yours too! enjoy it :D

Still waiting for my new Manix, I'm going mad waiting, pulling my hair out. I just cant wait.

Thank God for Google images, every time I stress about not having the knife, I go back and look at some pics.

Yea, that s30v is some tough stuff. Crucible doesn't like to talk about its secrets but s30v has some special stuff in it. Kryptonite .002% too improve edge retension and hardenability and for overall toughness...... .0173% CHUCK NORRIS.

Took mine out on a picnic today. Went through the Pepper Jack cheese like a Spyderco should. Pried open a bag of chips. No blade damage... ;)

Zwaplat: yep, it _can_ cut (50 mm long, ~1 mm diameter) nails with batoning. :D (In these test 3 nails were cut half with only a slight, ~0,3 mm chip.)
It's not an usual daily task, but good to know what could you do with the Manix.
It seems Spyderco knows something about heat treatening... ;)

Yea, still waiting.............

I've pulled all my hair out, developed a facial tic and all my cuticles are bleeding profusly. The door on my mailbox is now bent so badly from me slaming it every 10 min. that it will no longer close. I havent been to work in over a week, my boss keeps calling and asking if I'm "OK". My children wont come near me anymore because I'm prone to fits of rage........

I think I need to find a knife shop to buy from from now on.

shotgunner11, all I can say is that you are going to love it when you get it. It will be worth the wait!!

OH THE WAITING........

I fashoned a makeshift Manix out of an old butter knife and some cardboard, just to tide me over.

The wife left me, said I cared about the knife more than her, that and something about how I never listen too her, I dont know, I wasn't paying attention.

I really hope this knife is over rated, everyone keeps talking it up. If it's as nice as everyone says, I'm going to start ordering more and more Spidies and the wife really will leave.

The waiting is OVER!!!

I am impressed is an understatment, this is a very well made blade.

The knife is lighter than I thought it would be, size is just about where I guessed. Its a touch thinner than my CRKT M1, which is a good thing.

I'll give a full review after some light testing.
