I am considering updating my backpack to a Maxpedition Vulture II, the largest pack they make. I like how rugged and functional they are, and appreciate the MOLLE setup. Plus I have a Proteus to connect to it for added volume.

However, there is no internal frame on these things. Has anyone used the large Vulture or Vulture II loaded up for extensive treks? If so, was it comfortable?

Haven't used those, but I've used extensively a Go-Lite Gust, which is a frameless spectra fiber pack that weighs 20.4 oz. and is rated for up to 35 lbs. I have used it for several 9 day pack trips.

You have to pack a frameless more carefully. I put my sleeping pad in the front of my Gust, against my back, to prevent anything from poking my back. You also have to experiment a bit to see which items fit where best. However, I really like the light weight of the pack. I have a 8+ lb. top-of-the-line Gregory internal frame that is hell for strong and very comfortable. However, it weighs at least 8 lbs. I haven't used it in about 5 years.

Thanks DWK2. I was wondering about that, too: you just need to pack stuff more carefully inside of it. I'm getting the Vulture II.

I've carried the Baby Condor with the Proteus attached to it... both fully loaded... all day, no problems.
