When talking about legal blade length doest it specifically have to be the length of the entire blade, or the length of the cutting edge? Seems to me the cutting edge (sharpended part) is what is relevant.

There is no universal definition of how this is done. This therefore typically winds up being up to the law enforcement representative at the time. For example, many LEOs will specifically look only at the actual edge length; others measure from tip to tang. Quite an unfortunate few will consider the entire weapon, butt to tip.

Remember that vague interpretations are intentional...not to make lawyers rich...but to help get obviously guilty but borderline evidentiary fools off the street, and allow clearly responsible knife owners leeway to keep knives in their hands.

You can argue, but that loophole works both ways.

The way that I have seen it mostly enforced is to measure from the end of the hilt at the blade to the tip. In other words, the deepest penetration that the blade, alone, can make.

cops use there own judgement, they may arrest you and then you have to spend costly money to defend your self...imho and i have been a knife exspert in calif years ago..id measure from the guard to the point..to be on the safe side. a 7.0"blade is considered by most as a deadly weapon..under 2.0" id think your safe..knives with guards are not daggers unless double edge generaly
