Just got this today from a fellow forum buddy, just thought I would share a few first thoughts on it. The first thing the person I bought it from said was 'its small'. He wasnt kidding, small it is

Blade length looks to be about 2 3/8" with the cutting edge right at 2". OAL is about 5 5/8" The Blade is 1/8" thick and keeps most of its thickness almost all the way to the point. It has a nice hollow grind and is quite even on both sides. The edge easily shaves hair from the arm. The handles are gold (i think

), kind of a hard color to describe...somewhere between gold and brown. They are either micarta, or g10, im not really sure. They are very well fitted to the handle, with no gaps visible. The grip is beefy for a knife of this size and seems to be extremely secure in a 3 finger grip. The blade finish is a very nicely done satin finish..and the makers logo is very pronounced and looks nice on the blade. I only have one teeny tiny gripe. Where the edge bevel begins, the first 1/8" seems to have been missed in sharpening. The bevel is there, but no edge...should be an easy 5 minute fix though, I was just kind of surprised at that given that the rest of the knife was obviously given alot of attention to the details. The rest of the edge all the way to the point is nicely done and very sharp. Overall, its a very nice little knife, and im sure its gonna be a super little utility blade. Tomorrow, im going to give it a pretty fair workout and should have be able to speak more on its performance afterwards.

Richard I think that's burgundy micarta. I've been looking at those neck knives, and the small Phase III's. www.jtknives.com for anybody who wants to take a look.
Ok, it's red micarta, and www.jtknives.com/meerdink.htm
should take you right to te Meerdinks.
He's got a beautiful hunter, too.

I would have to agree whole-heartedly, the Meerdinks are great little knives! Fit and finish is superb! I have one in black micarta, and it is an awesome little knife! Sometimes good things come in small packages! I really like mine!

Richard,

Nice one. I have a Three Finger. It too lacks an edge at the 1/8" of blade right after ricasso. Otherwise, it is perfect. I like his stuff.

Didn't realize JT was online now. Nice link.

It's supposed to be gold rich. Looked from gold to brown depending on the lght on the ones I handled.

Richard,

What's the steel? I have a Meerdink Phase III in 440C, and it's a good performer. Does anybody know whether he uses different steels besides 440C and ATS-34?

Owen, nope, its not bugundy...not even close.

Gene, is your the same model as mine? If it is, then you know what I mean about the sturdy grip...no chance of not being able to control it, its great.

Sing, I am considering the 3 finger as well, is the grip on it pretty secure?

e-Utopia, you act like you handled this very knife before...hehe

Tom, yep, its gold alright. Kinda neat how the color varies a bit in different light.

Frantium, its ats34....I dont know what variety of steels he has avaliable.

Welp, got a few free hours, so im gonna go test it out now...will let ya know how it does.

Frantium,
Kurt also works in D2 and damascus.

e-mail Joe Tarbell ( jtarbell@warwick.net )for more info. Joe's a great one to buy from or just bull**** with.

Don't limit yourself, when you call ask for whatever steel you would prefer, and talk to the man and I'm sure you can work something out. The bueaty of custom knives is that you can do this kind of stuff. Kurt's a great guy, very into hunting and fishing and makes very "useful" knives. But I've also seen some art stuff and he makes some awesome bowies too!

I have two of his knives and I've handle a lot more, all primo!

Richard, I have the one with the ramp on top. That combined with the indexes make a secure grip. The three finger with the more traditional drop point looks real nice.

It doesn't have the ramp. How much difference that makes, I don't know.

I got similar knife with the same problem. I was advised up front about it but still cannot figure out how come it was missed. I compared my knife with the knives on Tarbell´s web site and they look differently. So I am wondering.... don´t we have some kind of "seconds"??

Otherwise the knife is fine, here is picture of it (I think this one shows its proportions a bit better... the blade is REALLY small).

Yes David, they do look a bit different, but I doubt that they are seconds. Probably just a variation of the original design.

I have been using and carrying mine quite a bit, still a great little knife, and edge holding is well above average. Hope ya enjoy yours as much as I like mine.

Richard is correct it's just a variation of the same design. As I understand it this little knife has gone thru 3 or 4 similar but slightly different stages. The version I have has less swells in the handle and a bigger (almost baby skinner) belly in the blade. I have one in black micarta, but I like the way the skeleton handled ones look to! So they're not 2nd's they're customs and don't you forget it
