Memory Upgrade

Just upgraded the RAM in my desktop and laptop. Went to 4 GB in both cases. The XP desktop appears to recognize 3.25 GB and the Vista laptop recognizes the 4 GB, but I've read that it also only uses a tad over 3 GB with 32 bit Vista. Noticable performance gains from both computers (especially the desktop that previously had 1 GB). Memory prices have really come down since I priced same last year. I paid around fifty bucks per computer for the upgrade. Bought it all from Crucial pursuant to the recommendation of one our office techies.

If I remember correctly RAM is one of the few things that Vista excels in vs XP. Vista handles more better than XP, but only showing 3.25 GB could be a hardware thing. on the upgrade though. More RAM is always better imo. If you want more though, you'll need to go 64-bit.

Enjoy the improved performance.

I've never heard anything bad about Crucial, but it is usually more expensive than other brands, especially if you buy direct from them.

Kingston is my usual choice, but I selected Patriot for my primary desktop. For repair and upgrade jobs, I usually select whatever is cheapest - Mushkin the last couple of times. Never had a problem with any of them.

Interesting that your 32 bit vista shows all 4. the reason that your xp machine shows 3.25G is that in a 32 bit system there is only enough "memory addresses" to allocate more than 3.5 on the machine, so .25G of addresses are being taken up in other places, such as the video card.
oh well.

Memory upgrade is a great way to boost a computer that sticks and freezes when you multi task. I have 4GB's in my MBP never have a problem with not enough ram.
