I've decided this needs a thread of its own. This is from Bura.

To Joi (me -- "son in law") and Banji (Yangdu -- niece) and all the fine HI customers who sent money for me: If you had not done this thing I think I would be dead so your great gift has given me more life than perhaps I deserve and for this there is not enough thanks in the world. I remember you all in my daily puja and when we do Bishwakarma puja we pray for all of you. This is the best I can do to repay you. Blessings to all of you and a special thanks from me and my family from the bottom of our hearts.

Uncle:

A return message, if you would be so kind....

Lal Bahadhur:
Bill Martino has told us many times that the kami puts a bit of his soul into each knife he makes. We have all had glimpses into your soul, and have found you to be a deserving friend. Many more good years to you.

Your Friends, The Madmen of the Forum :D

I would have wrote:

Bura, j00 r00L d00d.

Translation: Bura, you rule dude.

but I think Wal's is slightly better. :D

When I taught photojournalism, I would mention that some cultures avoided having visitors take their picture for fear that they would be taking a piece of their spirit. Of course, a good photo does capture just that...the spirit of the person, or scene.

I have a Bura-made AK, and have copied photos that Uncle Bill has posted of Bura.

His spirits lives large in my home, and heart.

Well said, Wal.

Bill:

Then tell him that only a certain kind of man can make a knife that deserves the mark of the Royal Kami, and we feel that this kind of man would be a friend, if we were to meet. Friends help friends.

If you don't want him to know we are nuts (and don't say he doesn't suspect this from our requests) just sign it "The Wild Men of The Forum"

Kentucky Ho!!

Bill, please tell Bura that none of us deserve our blessings, they wouldn't be blessings then. Thanks are due to Pala and yourself, who make our lives richer by giving us a glimpse of the Kamis and their lives so far away and so different from our own. I for one feel I know these people, they are as real to me as my neighbors.

yes what more can be said, my grandma allways used to say.
[good things come in little packages] referring to us her at the time little grandsons.
i cant think of a more apt description of the people of nepal.
bura just happens to be in my opinion one of the best.and i wish him long life and happiness. regards ghorka and family.
ken:)

Uncle Bill,
Please tell Bura that I, like everyone who has one of his khukuris, am glad that he's feeling better and that the gift of his talent is blessings enough for me.

Best wishes to all!
Mike

Many thanks all for input. There is a very strong chance that I may be in Nepal for the Christmas holidays and I'll do best if I deliver these messages in person. I'll get a good translator and make sure the message gets across. I can tell if they do or if they don't.

Make sure you take lotsa pics :)

How's the situation with the Maoists? I haven't heard much in the past few months, so I assume things have quieted down a bit.

The first HI Khuk that I ordered was a 15 " Bura AK. I sure do have to agree with all that feel spirit thing that kind of flows from the knife. A man knows that whoever made this knife has to be a friend. For me, these knives that I have have become my friends too. There has too be something to the spirit thing. They won't let me neglect them very long. Kind of like they call to a man for the attention they deserve. And, I think that is why I have not found any rust on these knives. They are babied along and faithfully cared for so that just doesn't get started.

The two Bura blades that I have, (I have said before) are just about as perfect as any man could possibly make a knife. And then I think of the type of work environment and tools they have and it is even more of a wonder.

I hope that Bura lives to make many many more knives. The way he is going with medication and at the shop already. He will pound steel again.:)

For my part, I'm just glad that all of us have been able to do something, however small individually, to help someone else who needed it. :)
