Question for those who have much more skill and ability than me; My first custom drop point that has micarta slabs that seem to be faded with age. I got it in 1976. Is there anything that can be done to restore the micarta? Or should I even think about it. It has had some decent use over the years.

Thanks.

I would think you could resand em with some fine grit(400 or 600) paper and rebuff them with OOOO steel wool to rejuvinate em. Work slow and you shouldn't need to remove a lot of material. Got a pic of the handle as it is now?

Thanks for your advice. Over the Christmas holidays I will give it a try. Heading to the hardware store anyway and will pickup the fine sandpaper.

I am not allowed yet to post pictures on the site. What does it take to be able to do that?

Thanks.

Thunder47 are you at 5th RTB ?, I was in Dahlonega but alls I got to see was the mountains, mountains and more mountains.

I think you have to pay to post pics but I could be wrong. When sanding on that knife watch the tang area as you dont want to scratch that part or remove to much material. What you really need is access to a buffer it would take all of a few minute to bring it back to new.

Good luck

I'm not at Camp Frank Merrill. Engineer attached to the 1st Cav waaay back when. Have lots of friends who were and some still are part of the 5th Rangers. Our Boy Scout Troop camps up there quite often and the Rangers are our Troop sponsor. Doubt many Boy Scouts have such access to such an experience unless they join such an outfit.

Is Ft. Polk still the coolest place in Louisana, with no mosquitos?

Thanks for the advice. I have a buffer and will see what it can do. Will also try some mineral oil on the sides as well.

Real quick. 320 sandpaper took off the faded material, buffed with red rouge, wiped all off and coated with mineral oil. Looks 100% better.

Thanks all. Great web site, good advice and the knives most of you guys make....I am in awe.

You don't have to pay to post pics. But you do have to use an image hosting site like imageshack to host the pictures I think the directions are in the faq section at the top of the page.

Here you go:

There are two ways to go about this:

* Get a paying membership, so you can attach images through the forums software (found under Advanced Posting)
* Host the image remotely on your own website, or with a service like ImageShack

If you choose the former method, all you will have to do is upload an image using the "attach" button when posting.

If you choose the latter, you'll need to make an image link by clicking on the button when posting. When the dialog box appears, replace the "http://" with the URL to your image. Be advised, you'll want the DIRECT URL, such as http://www.imagesite.com/files/myimage.jpg instead of a dynamic generated path.

You can post pictures by putting them into Photobucket then linking them to this thread.
