I am looking for a good work/self defense knife. I was considering BM 942 and Emerson CQC 7. Then I discovered the Microtech LCC. I like the desighn but I was not sure about the three blade finishes. Microtech offers Black, Stonewash and Bead Blast. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? What finish is shown on the www.microtechknives.com web page for the LCC? People who have, or have had this knife are you satisfied or is there a better knife for the price?

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

Welcome to the forums:)

I have had a MT L-UDT in stonewash and a Socom in black. The MT black coating is probably the strongest next to boron carbide. You couldn't take it off without sandpaper. The stonewash is actually kinda "dressy" looking IMO. I got tired of it after 2 months and mirror polished the whole thing, which looked much better.

AJP,

The one pictured at the MicroTech site is bead blasted. It's a very nice, even BB, and I like it very much.

However, if you plan on using your LCC, I can't say enough good things about the stonewashed finish. It looks really cool, sort of galvanized, and it hides scratches very well. If you've ever seen a Sebenza up close and personal, then you've basically seen the MT verson. Now, some will argue that the Sebenza's stonewash finish is more aesthetically pleasing, but I can't really tell much difference. The black version looks very tactical, but I really hate black blades now that I'm older. Microtech's black blades are durable though, no complaints.

For the money, they are superb. Excellent fit and finish, great materials, etc. I have no experience with the new models that sport the anodized aluminum bolsters, but the older models with titanium bolsters are the nuts. Some will argue that there is unsufficient protection for one's hand, due to the complete lack of a guard, but I tend to disagree. I'm sure someone else will voice their opinions, and possibly attack mine.

If it were my choice, I'd go with the stonewash finish, and a plain edge. The combo edge is nice, but this knife has great "lines" and the plain edge really shows this feature off.

Hope this helps!

For a self defense type knife I would stay away from the 942. It is a great knife, but the handles are aluminum and no real protection for the hand for thrusting. I love the looks of the LCC personally and will probably pick one up someday. I also like the CQC7. As far as finish goes, I would go for stonewash on any knife that is being used for utility stuff.

I have a MT LCC M/A with the black blade coating and a plain edge and I really like it. I have carried and used it for over a year now and it cuts really good in my opinion. The coating has heald up really well and I really like the handle shape, it really fits my hand good. The 154CM takes and holds a pretty good edge for my everyday cutting needs. I think that it is one of the best produstion folders on the market. It locks up SOLID. i think that your money would be well spent on this knife.

The LCC is a great knife at a decent price. The newer models have aluminum bolsters, rather than the original Ti, and the price has increased.

If you want one new, you'll have to act fast, as the ever-mysterious marketing pratices of MT are about to strike again. The LCC either has been or is just about to be discontinued.

Last year this was "the" knife around Bladeforums. For months and months you literally couldn't log on without seeing a lengthy new thread raving about it. Entirely justified, in my opinion. I've got the stone-washed, plain-edge, titanium version. The quality approaches a custom knife at a fraction of the cost, and you get a Greg Lightfoot design.

I, at one time, had 9 Microtech LCC's ! :D Now. . .I'm down to 4 (3 DA's and 1 MA). Of the 4; 2 have stonewashed and 2 have black ti blades. Love them all and am partial to. . .them all ! LOL

The LCC is a awesome knife ! Large, beefy ~ built to last ! I use mine in the field and as a EDC. . .and have absolutely no regrets in purchasing them.

The first thing you notice, on the knife, is the carbon fiber scales (unless you get micarta). Either way. . .you win. They're terrific looking and extreme durable. You just can't beat carbon fiber. While the knife is a "tactical", it's kinda hard to explain, but it doesn't necessary have that typical "tactical" look to it. The titanium (or aluminum) bolsters have a very nice bead blasted finish. The knife sits deep in the pocket and the clip holds the knife securely in place. There is a black (G-10?) backspacer, which assists in providing strength and rigidity. The blade. . .perfect ! And has the typical razor sharpness that MT is known for ! !

The overall fit and finish is very very good. The knife is very solid and precise. Like I said before. . .no regrets !

While I can't come close to Gig (who can? :D ), I had 4 at one time. Down to one now, plain edge with stonewashed blade and Ti bolsters. While there may be better factory folders that excel at any one thing, the LCC handles all of them very well. It is very robust, has great lockup and the fit and finish will shame any other factory folder out there for the price. Check the For Sale forum regularly and you will see them pop up in new condition for around $125 or less for the standard models.

I have 2 LCC's. Great knives that approach custom quality IMO. I would reccomend the stonewas finish.
