Mike Cooper has been working on his new d-guard bowie. From his description of all he was doing to it, it sure sounded first class. File worked spine, polished gruar, damascus blade and so on. So, he finally finished it, and sent the knife to me to have some pictures done. Worst part is, I GOTTA GIVE IT BACK....WAAAAA!!!

Man, this is one fine piece of work. Good size knife, but amazingly light in wieght. Attention to detail is fantastic. Nothing was missed on this one, everything is just right.

I think this bowie shows that Mike has taken that 'next step' in knife making, and should be extremely proud of his accomplishment.

Thought you all would enjoy seeing it as well.

Thanks for posting the picture and info Richard! You take fantastic photographs!!!
Bo, the blade is 10 1/2" long, 1 1/2" tall and 1/4" thick. It's Thunder Forge damascus, twist #2 pattern. I was fortunate enough to find UAI's table at the Blade Show and talked with Ric and he helped me choose the steel. The steels in the damascus are 1095 and 01. The guard is 416 stainless, thanks Tim!! I was suprised how easy it is to cut, drill, mill, and sand, but real hard to bend. I had to use a piece of round stock and a big dead blow hammer to shape the guard. The handle is a big chunk of caribou antler Mike Willoya sent me from Alaska. Thanks Mike, got anymore???

I have never seen antler this stout. The stuff is about 2" thick but only has about a 1/2" center of marow in it, the rest is solid bone.
Thanks Jerry and Phillip for the kind words! I am so happy that you appreciate my work on this one!! It was a tough one to make and finish. I worked on it for a little over 3 months and took Tim Herman's advice and finished the blade, guard and extra furniture by hand, no buffing. The only buffing I did was the handle, and it came out real nice. I learned so much making this knife, and patience is the most important.

Psssssst, Richard, when ya gonna show em the sheath???

Oh yeah, I finally got a liner lock together that locks up great! I'll post a pic when it's done!! Yehaaaaaaaa!

Very nice Michael. That caribou is awesome. Sweet design and I know the workmanship is first rate as well. Congrats on fine piece of work. Very few D-guards have ever caught my eye, this is definitely one of them.

Awesome Michael! I love it. You are definitely making great progress. Wonderful knife!

Thanks for the pic Richard. I feel your pain at having to return that beauty.

I should also mention that the sheath is a work of art itself. Very heavy duty construction. Also, a nice snake skin inlay.

Geeeeez Mike, what a beauty, you didn't miss a trick on this one. I know how hard you worked on this piece and it sure looks like it was worth it.

Nice pics Rich. I've got a question if Rich isn't keeping it, what's going to happen with that beauty? Does it have a home yet?

Is it just me, or does anyone think that guard could use some engraving?

Very nice work on a tough knife Mike - Congratulations.

Phil: yes it screams for it to me too.

Thanks Phil and Gus!!! I've been seeing engraving on that guard since before the knife was finished! Maybe someone can upgrade it down the road. It has no home of yet. I was thinking about raffling it off. Not real sure what to do with it yet.

I could go either way on the engraving. I think a small amount would be nice. But leaving it untouched would also be just fine. The guard is mirror polished, and really looks nice without drawing attention away from the rest of the knife. Either way, its a real beauty.

Mike, very nice piece indeed! Congrats and if money's not a big deal I would say keep it for your grandchildren some day! Would be a very nice gift.

no no no no.
mike,you cant sell it.
you HAVE to raffel it.
you know....so a certain SOMEONE can win it
biggrin.gif

(oh yeah, checks in the mail, hope its enough to convince you to let me "win")hint hint nudge nudge.

Lmao Rob!!! The biggest reason I was thinking about raffling it is because I don't have a clue what to ask for it. I wish there was someplace we could send knives and have them appraised.
