Military model - old style...opinions?

Hi,

I have just posted on the Spydersite forum with a detailed version of this question...I think I'd really like one in ATS-34, which I've found NIB and locally.

Are these early versions a good design? I've heard of some concerns with the lock function on the earliest ones...at least I think I have. Is this something to be concerned about? Is the ATS-34 used in these models really good, as good say as that used in my Spyderco Wegner? Would it be the same stuff?

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

My understanding is that there were some problems with the version that had two clip screws. Spyderco seems to have worked the bugs out with the version that has three clip screws. They did make a three clip screw version in ATS-34. If that is the version you are looking at I wouldn't hesitate to get it. The ATS-34 should perform as well as the Wegners steel.

Dennis,

Thank you for this. This sound slike some of the detail that I heard about...I'll check it out today.

Cheers, Jeff.

Dennis,

I had a look at the knife today, and the one I'm considering has the traingle of three clip screws, and ATS-34 steel.

I didn't mention before that I already own a Military plain edge in CPM-440V, but think I might prefer one in ATS-34. I have had some trouble in the past getting a really good "shaving sharp" edge on th CPM-440V blade. Conversely, I find it very easy to achieve this with ATS-34, at least on my Wegners.

What do you think about these two steels in comparison to each other?

Jeff.

Hard for me to say which is "better". I believe the ATS-34 would be somewhat easier to sharpen. The 440V should hold an edge longer. Either one is a premium steel that will serve you well.

Dennis,

I appreciate your feedback. I will likely make a decision about this today. I would rather have the one in ATS-34, but I don't know if I should buy the other in case I can't sell my current Military or trade it.

I have worked a lot with the blade on my CPM-440V Millie, never really attaining the edge I would like...so this whole thing is somewhat born out of frustration.

My quandary has been taken care of, thanks to the co-operation of my local knife dealer. I approached him this A.M and explained my situation, at which time he immediately agreed to trade me the ATS-34 bladed knife for my very slightly used version in CPM-440V for a small charge. You see, I had acquired my Military from my brother-in-law some time ago (not from him) so this fellow had no obligation to help me here but he did anyway. Good guy.

I was delighted with this solution, as I didn't really want to end up with two Military plain edges. I already have a serrated Military in CPM-440V to go with this new one. The fact is that there are simply too many other Spydies that I aspire to own, to have exact duplicates; at least right now. Here a link to a picture of my new baby:

Thank you for your helpful comments, Jeff/1911.
