mini grip vs. ritter mini grip??

I am a new member and am trying to decide on my first edc folder. I had a chance to visit my local knife shop and check out the standard benchmade mini griptillian. That is one heckuva knife!

I did some more poking around the forums and saw that there is "another" version of this knife called the mini RSK. I found pictures of it...but cannot tell what makes it "better" other than a little bit different blade geometry (if this is a plus).

Question: For those of you who have both, which do you prefer?

I work in IT so the majority of its usage would be fighting off zombie cardboard boxes and packing tape. Maybe some quick and dirty wire stripping.

I am looking for a knife with good edge retention, easier sharpening and a comfortable handle.

Does anyone have a pic of these two models side-by-side?

Both will serve you well.

At the end of the day, I do like the Ritter better. S30V and the bullnosed shape does it for me. :cool:
 
A third option is Cabella's D2 steel Mini-grip
D2 has better edge retention than S30v

The functional differences will not matter to the average new-to-knives EDCer. Go with the one that appeals to you the most.
 
As a newbie, I would like to have something that is "easier" to sharpen. I am still trying to learn a sharpening technique...so a more forgiving blade would be better for me.

Thanks for info about the D2. I had not considered that one.
 
I prefer the blade shape of the Ritter and think it's worth the extra $$. While both are good steels D2 is the harder of the two to sharpen even if it holds an edge longer than S30V.
 
The easiest to sharpen will be the 154cm or 440c versions. None of them are difficult to sharpen.
 
Its your cash, but for what you are going to use it for, the standard version will work very well. You can't go wrong with any of the 3 versions mentioned though, and the great thing is, if you get one and don't like it, they usually sell very quickly...
 
How about a 556 and a 555HG for the price of one Ritter? Two blade styles. 154CM is a supersteel.

I like the look of the Ritter OK, but you do pay a premium for the steel. The 556 is more pointy/stabby.

I personally think this is the best idea. Or a 556 & a Delica Wave
 
I like the 556 & 555hg idea. Who has the plain Jane black handled ones in stock? NewGraham does not seem to.

Heck, I would even try a good used one if somewhere one needed a good home... :)

Get one black one. Then later, get a yellow or different color (blue, grey, pink) one with the other blade style, then you can switch blades back and forth, depending on your mood.
 
I recently went through the same thing. I bought the regular Mini-Grip and the ended up with the Ritter Mini-Grip.

Get the Ritter Mini-Grip!

I am a machinist and cut a lot of cardboard. The High Flat Grind on the Ritter slices through the cardbord much better than the grind on the regular mini-grip. I tested the both for a few weeks, and that is what I found. Don't get a black coated blade. Tha cardbord will rub it of sooner than later.

I love my Ritter Mini Grip.
 
I have 556s in 154CM and D2, and Mini RSKs (558) in S30V and M2HS.

The more pricey Cabelas and RSK knives are better, but only slightly. For me the extra cost was warranted, but do not rule out the "basic" 556 - it is a great knife.

That said...if you are happy to pay a little more for the Mini RSK Mk1, I am sure that you won't regret it.
 
You really can't go wrong with any of them, truth be told. However, if you can swing it, the Ritter is very good with it's S30V steel.
