which spyderco sharpmaker set is the one i want? i see them selling for such varied prices on ebay that im not sure whats different about them (example: http://cgi.ebay.com/Spyderco-Triang...goryZ475QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem or http://cgi.ebay.com/SPYDERCO-SHARPM...ryZ63800QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem or http://cgi.ebay.com/SPYDERCO-SHARPM...yZ116005QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

im wanting to sharper a longer blade, like 14", many people have recommended a file, but what about something like this http://www.amazon.com/Two-Step-Knif...sr_1_22/102-2153767-9580112?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen

on that note ive searched and searched and searched for a place to sharpen the 14" for me with no luck. searched yellowpages for knives and swords and guns. found many many stores of such type that couldnt recommend any sharpening places to me. found a couple places that sharpened knives but wouldnt touch anything long like what i had. found some promising leads like a sword shop, only to find it had gone out of business. found a place that sharpens industrial cutting equipment. im stuck now. im in the atlanta area. can anyone give me any specific or general leads on how to locate a place that would sharpen a long blade?

on most fine knives i find that the point has a nice little triangle. how on earth does one do this by hand?

it seems the spyderco is portable enough to carry around with you, but id also like to learn how to do old school sharpening with just a stone and strop. are there any good tutorials on doing freehand sharpening?

and what stones do i need to accomplish this? i see so many kinds of stones that im not really sure where to start. some stones have built in grooves, some dont. i understand coarse, medium, and fine are different steps in the sharpening process, but then i see some things like arkansas stones or diamond stones or any other number of stones with different name. i also see stones mounted or not mounted in so many forms, this is also confusing. and finally, in my mind it doesnt seem that people would carry around a collection of stones to sharpen their knife, usually just one. so id like to understand about all the different kinds and also how you can sharpen with just one kind.

where can i buy strops (i know cardboard will do)?

how many times can u sharpen a knife before it disappears? :D

Just the price and whence they're being sold. Spyderco makes only one (1) Sharpmaker. There are two additional sets of rods you can get for it, diamond and ultra-fine, but that's it.

There were also the original Sharpmakers, that only had one angle (40* I believe).
