moore maker?

I need to buy a new carrying knife. The one I’ve carried for 5 years now is finally wearing out. Moore maker's stockman with a smooth bone handle is about the same as my old knife. I also like that the blades seem like they're deeper in the handle and I like that also. I’ve read one bad review. He said that the blades were a little rough, scratches, file marks and such. I’m not too concerned about that being a carrier and all but a few things I’m concerned with is the handle quality and how tough the springs are. I don't like to strain my finger nails to open it. If anyone has any experience with these knifes please let me know what you think about them. They’re kinda pricy to just buy one and not be happy with it. Thanks.

I have one like this, good fit and finish, and NOT a nail breaker.

What steel do you want? The Moore Maker knives are 1095. Here is a picture I took today, it's the best I have of my MM 5301 stockman:

I really like it - great fit and finish, the blades are thin with thin edge bevels, smooth action.

If you like D2, get a Queen #9 stockman, here is a picture that includes mine:

The D2 Queen knives frequently come with obtuse edges that need to be reprofiled (a pain with D2) but they hold an edge better than the 1095. Other options would be a Case stockman (I prefer the Cr-V to the stainless) or an Eye Brand stockman, either of those would serve you well, too.

i have a MM 5 blade sowbelly smooth yellow bone, and a stag jumbo trapper with the very best stag i have seen. both in 1095, v. good knives, no faults.
i think both these were made by Queen. Camillus used make some of their knives, so now there MAY be a difference in quality of some of the MM knives.

Thanks guys for the help. I studied up on 1095 and the D2. Sounds like the two are the best steels. I really liked your Queen knife Lambertiana, tried to find one just like it with no luck. Love the handle. I ended up getting the 5301 MM stockman. Got the honey pick bone. It was one of the more expensive at $87 but I liked the handle the best. Should be delivered in a week or so. I'll write back how I like it. Again thanks for the help.

I have a moore maker full size stag handle trapper that I like pretty well. Skinned a deer with it friday night. Pretty much only used the spey blade, and it only took a couple of licks on the stone to get it shaving again.

Received my new knife about a week or so ago. Fit and finish is very nice. Blades are tight and have a nice snap to them. Very smooth action to it and the springs seem to be the perfect stiffness. The honey color of the bone is nice looking with no gaps or any fit problems. Another cool feature is that it has a shield on both sides. One is blank I'm assuming it is for engraving. The blades sharpened up razor sharp and it seems like it will be a good replacement to my old favorite carrier. Thanks again for the help.

Nice choice.

That Queen Stockman you asked after is probably in carved stag bone from the 2005 series I believe.

Just like to KNOW which knife wore out after 5 years use?? This all goes to show that EDC rotation takes off some of the strain......good luck with your new knife

I had a smooth bone bulldog stockman. I really abused the knife I guess. For my line of work I use the sheepfoot blade all day. Only had about half the blade left and it was getting loose. The clip blade is still good but a third is gone. I don't know what steel that bulldog uses but I think it is soft. I was continually sharpening that knife. I really liked the knife so I wanted to put it up before I broke it. I now have a leatherman that I modified the serrated blade into a sheepfoot so maybe I can keep this knife longer.

Isn't "EDC rotation" a bit of an oxymoron? "I every-day-carry this one every Thursday." :p

Uh uh! No. Just means your knives get selected for duty from time to time:D
Rather than working one to death and it's a grand excuse to add to your knife family!

Anyone have the Moore Maker 4 blade 3 1/2 inch congress #5400? I've been eyeing it for a while. I have one of their 3 1/2 inch trappers in buckskin jigged bone - nice knife.

I have this model with bone scales, and mine is a nail breaker.

I like it, but wish it opened just a tad easier.
Try what I did to one custom EDC of Todd Davison's, it was VERY tight upon arrival, I took a plastic binder edge and put over the sharpened edge of knife and then proceeded to open and close it about 1000 times, really! Added some oil and flushed it out of all metal worn off and now it opens rather easy, no blade play, just enough wear to loosen it up.

But EDC = every day carry. From time to time would be FTTT carry.

What makes Moore Maker more expensive than all the other high end manufactures?

I have two stockmans in Delrin.
They are well made, but...
What makes the price jump with yellow bone?

It sounds like you have a job that is a killer of pocket knives. Maybe for your line of work, whatever that may be, you should just keep a Stanley utility knife at your work, or carry a Super Knife with replaceable blades on the job so's not to kill the next nice pocket knife.

I was a machinist by trade, and the shop was a hard environment for pocket knives. We all kept utility knives on the work benches.

I have a Moore Maker Congress and IMHO it's the perfect size to carry. It holds an edge pretty well and looks nice. If you want a cheaper alternative you should consider a Winchester 3 1/2 Congress. It's the same knife except it has two pen blades instead of a clip and coping blade. Larry

I have two Moore Makers. One a Camillus Muskrat, the other a Queen Whittler. The main blade in the Queen is a nail breaker. I really believe they are overpriced. My Muskrat was less, but it was as sharp as a butter knife. I have worked and worked on that knife. I think I am getting a Queen Canoe in 1095 for Christmas. It is about $30 less than the MM Whittler. So far my favorite knifes are Bokers.

I have two stockman knives from MM. One (yellow handle, 6th down) is Queen made. The other (black handle, 7th down) is Camillus made. Both are very nice knives.
