If you were walking somewhere in a public place and found what was an obviously a very expensive custom made knife (Darrel Ralph, Johnny Stout Tim Herman) what would you do? Would you try to find the owner of the knife, or would you thank your lucky stars and take it home for your collection.(finders keepers)? Would you try and find the owner and press for a reward?
I know if things were reversed i'd want someone to try and return the knife to me, I would offer a reward. I would hope if the situation ever came up I would do the right thing(MINE!!) lol.

I guess it comes down to how you were raised, your mores and standards, but I would try and get the knife back to the very distraught owner.

How about you??

If you had morals you would not have to ask the question. You would know what to do.

The question was not to myself, rather to the others in the forum.

Well Paul if I found your knife, I want to tell you I would do everything in my power to find you and get that knife back to you.
I want to tell you that, but that would be a huge friggin lie. I'd have me a new knife and you'd be SOL, for being dumb enough to lose it.

PhilL is from Brooklyn. His attitude defines morality in that God forsaken place

Actually, I have considered such a possibility since I am carrying expensive knives everyday now. My guess is the finder would have no idea what it was and would probably destroy or lose it in short order. Most folks can not appreciate the quality of a good knife. I figure if I lose a knife somewhere, it is gone forever. So I try real hard not to lose my knives. You never know if Phil might be lurking about nearby...

LOL I hear that! Remind me never to take any of my customs to Brooklyn! ;-(

As much as I enjoy knives, I would contact the maker.

As Mr. Fisk can attest. I was hanging around the Blade Show while everyone was packing up saying my good byes and helping Sava Damlovac and Bub Worrell pack up. They have become close friends and I only get to see them once a year. Stumbled upon a knife on the floor made by a Journeyman Smith that I did not know and gave it to Jerry.

It would be difficult for me to own and enjoy that partcular knife. I bet it would for that Phil guy too

It is usually pretty wise, not to pick up an unknown weapon. It might have been dropped for a reason.

No brainer. Honesty is the best policy. No question. You return the knife. Thanks for finding it. I was so upset when I lost it. Just mail it to me as soon as you can.

I was in the Bahama's about two years ago. I lost a prototype LDC knife made by Phil Boguzewksi.

Im still waiting to hear on that one.

Some Bastid is down there cleaning out Conch shells with my knife!

About 12 years ago I was diving a wreck in the Cayman Islands and lost a Custom Skeletonized Dive knife. Good knife...bad sheath. Didn't lose the sheath.

Still havent heard anything on that one either.

After reading this thread Im curious, PhilL when was the last time you were in the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas?

I would contact the knife maker, and post everywhere I could to find the owner. I know how I would feel if I lost such a knife and would never feel right about keeping it.

Heres one along the same lines..I think..I recieved 3 knives in the mail today..Yee Haa..BUT..one of them was just left on my doostep with a delivery confirmation tag on it...(requires signature I believe.) the other 2 knives came insurerd and required my going to post office to sign for and pick up.The one knife left on my door step was from knife art larry connelley..it wasnt insurerd..I was surprised about that (450 dollar knife) any way when I went to post office to pick up other knives I commented on the one left on my doorstep..joking with the guy I said I could make a claim for this one and he said yep..didnt know why it was left. The moral is I guess i could have gotten a free knife and knife art could have collected also I guess...(Not sure about that since wasnt insurerd) BUT..no way I could do that...must be those morals kicking in...like finding the wallet with all the cash in it and returning it ( done that one 3 times)

Important moral questions and a short meaningless parable:

What is reality?

Does PhilL really exist?

What was he doing in the Cayman Islands with an off-shore bank account containing all the money he has made from selling the knives he has 'found' following Les around the world?

Why am I making this post?

Is it a sin?

If you find a knife it the forest, and flick it open, does it make a sound?

I found a guy's wallet once. It had lots of money in it (several hundred dollars). I called and arranged to meet him to return it. When I handed it over, he looked inside, looked at me with surprise, and said "but, all the money is here and so are my credit cards". I said 'good'. He was so astonished he tried to give me his money. I declined. If I wanted his money, why return the wallet?

If you are addressing me westernfla, I suspect I am being baited. Not sure why, but here is my answer:

What makes you think anything really 'belongs' to anyone?

I can not control what other people may do. That is what policemen are for. I can only do what I think is right. Thou shalt not steal makes sense, even if I Kant rationalize Why

I would do the right thing and try to find the owner. Think if it were you. I beleave a vast majority of knife lovers have integrity and would be proud to hand the knife back to its owner.
