Has anyone noticed the back page of the November Blade magazine? If I read this ad right they are offering copies of knives from Moran, Lake, and England apparently right down to the stamp on the ricasso.

This begs two questions:
Is this done with consent of these three makers? If not, is this legal?

Why would anyone in there right mind ever purchase such a knive?

Protodoc,

I am sure this is a collaboration between the makers and the company. They wanted the best selling piece from the makers. I am sure they got paid a good amount of money for it too.

Why would it strike anyone as surprising that these incredibly talented, incredibly in-demand makers would want to put out a factory collaboration, to give regular folks a shot at owning some of their work?

Every one of them is very accessible on a personal level, and only regrets the fact that they can't produce knives fast enough and affordable enough one at a time for all the folks who want them to have them. It's not for the money, because they all command huge sums for every piece they make.

That CAS Moran looks spectacular. I doubt that any of us will ever own, or even get to touch a Moran like that in any other way than a factory collab.

Thanks for the comments. It does seem that I am the only one who was taken aback by this.

The reason the ad caught my eye is that the purpose behind this project appears to be to create handmade reproductions of custom knives. In custom / factory collaborations companies take a good design and mass produce it, attempting to retain most of the quality at a lower price point. No one would confuse a Camillus Talon with a Simonich Cetan but the heritage is obvious.

Here the copy appears to be intended to mimic the originals by these top makers. It wouldn't be my cup of tea but different strokes for different folks.
