I was going to post this in the "Give your kid a knife" thread, but decided to toss up a new thread instead.

My son and one of my daughters with their Izulas. These pics are actually from the day after Christmas.

The boy was first to get bit. He was kinda ticked at me because I took the knife away while I bandaged him up. He thought he was in trouble for cutting himself. I told him that if I was in trouble for every time I cut myself, I'd be in prison for life. He said "Oh good, can I have my knife back now?"

Then the girl, (bet you can't guess what her favorite color is). She just stood there like "do you really have to take a picture of this?".

She also just wanted her knife back. When she was done with her shaving, she wanted me to take this picture for her. She was proud.

They love their knives. They know it's part of me, and they have made it part of them as well. It is pretty rare for either of them to be outside without their Izula now. Bare in mind that we are not Suburbanites, we are on acreage, surrounded by acreage, surrounded by boonies. Your mileage may vary.:D

SJ, the same pink Izula has found it's way to Ohio in our home as well. However, my wife has not been "bitten" as of today, she is on the mend from some medical issues this year & will hopefully have the opportunity this summer when she has some strength back. As of today, she sits and pulls it out of it's sheath and comments how much easier she is at getting it to "pop" out. Great shots of a dad passing along knowledge to a younger generation.
I was 7 years old when I got my first knife, grew up on a farm of 300 acres & like you, surrounded by acres and acres of boondocks.
Good on you for your efforts.
Be safe.

My first cut was cutting a small sapling down towards myself crouching. Still have the scar on the knee to prove it. Mom wan't too hot on it, because it was my Dad's knife but he told her I had to learn somehow.

My Dad had taught me proper saftey but kids are kids. No matter how well you teach them, they are still learning. Experience is the best teacher.

Great job Steeljunky. It's great to see forum members passing on knowledge and not afraid to let the kids experience things firsthand, even some painful things.

I couldn't agree more. This is how my dad grew up, its how I grew up, and now I'm passin' it on to my kids.
This is nothing out of the ordinary for us, this is just how we live.

Heck I still have the scar on my shin from a wood splitting incident with a axe that happened when I was 13... I've had so many small cuts even when I was a kid in the woods it ain't funny... All part of growing up in the country... Every cut a lesson...

Thanks meako.
In all reality, I'd rather them get a cut on their finger doin' something productive, than rot their brain cooped up in the house playing video games all day..... To each his own i guess.
Personally, I thing the next generation would be better off if they would get out of the house a little more.

How did they take the cuts? Good? Or did they freak out?

They didn't freak out at all. The boy was more concerned that it meant he was going to get the knife taken away, and the girl didn't seem to care one way or the other that it happened at all. (she has always been the tough one though).
As I was taking the pictures, (the two incidents were only like 20 minutes apart) my son was like, "Ya, Ya, dad, I know, it'll just make me stronger". It was actually pretty funny.

They had already been using knives before this happened, but until they got their Izulas, they had just borrowed something of mine.
Now their stoked to have their own.

The wrap in the pink izula matches great! I kinda want a pink one now...

Yeah, my wife doesn't like pink, like at all, but she is way jealous of that Izula.
She says if they aren't going to come out with a blue one, she wants the pink.

Gotta love it!
