Mud Razor sharpening and edge question

What kind of edge do the mud razors have? I tried touching up my mud razor with a spyderco sharpmaker. It does a fine job on one side. But on the other side I feel a lot of resistance. It seems the rods aren't hitting the edge, it's hitting higher up on the knife almost where the coating starts

Thanks for the help.

I could be wrong, but I think those were made during the asymetrical edge era. If not, then following those they have all been convex edges. Either way I wouldn't ever use a Sharpmaker on a convex edge. It'll take the curve right out of the edge and make it a V grind. Unless of course you want to remove the amazingly cool and complexically user friendly edge the factory put on it. If you don't already know how kick a$$ convex edges are, check this link out to learn why: http://www.kosterknives.com/convexedge.htm

One of the most amazing features about a convex edge is how easy it is to resharpen it. There are a lot of ways to sharpen a convex edge properly, and the Sharpmaker isn't on the list. Check out the "Keeping it sharp" tips on swampshack.com, or do a search in this forum about sharpening. Sharpmakers should only be used for low grade V grinds.

Isn't the hell razor a v edge? THe mud razor might not be I've never held it. I don't have mine around though. Also the ST-56 and Euro basic are both v grinds I thought?

I had on my HR a v edge....
I don't think they are asymetrical:confused:

I don't think the Mud Razor is an asymetric edge.

There are any number of people who have converted their Swamp Rat or Busse edges to a V-grind, using a Sharpmaker or EdgePro, and are happy with the results. Others use a strop, leather or mousepad, and keep the convex edge. To each his own.

I don't know about the early years, but no Ergo or Fusion's were made with V grinds. They were either asym's or convex. Busse's convex edges are among the most sophisticated any company does. I always laugh when people complain that their knives didn't show up shaving sharp from the factory. That's the nature of a convex edge. If they are shaving, it's only got a micorbevel and those just aren't as solid an edge as a nice full convex.

Do yourself a favor chickenfried, follow that link I provided and learn about these types of edges. Then go get a leather strope and fix the edge on that awesome muddy of yours.

Mud Razor's are just Hell Razors without CBT. They are saber ground with a "V" edge. Therefore if your sharpener is hitting the coating it is set at too shallow of an angle.

Correct. Busse has not made an asymmetrical edged knife in a few years, and the Mud Razor is less than a year old I believe.
