im runing forced air and wondered if i could drill a small hole about 1"-2" away from the forge in the burner tube and tap it for a small tube. i would drip some oil into the burner tube after the forge is running with LP. i would cut the LP back a little and turn up the blower. i was hoping to reduce propane usage when im running wide open. so i would be using oil and propain at the same time. what do you think.

J,
Some of the guys are using propane or lp ignition to bring the oil up to ignition temps. Other people just throw some lit charcoal into the forge body to ignite the oil. General consensus is that around 1300 degrees the oil will self ignite.

I can't see any problems with it other than the plumbing nightmare lol

the thing is that i dont want to just use oil. i want to use the oil to cut my propain cost as i dont allwase have oil. but when i cook fryed food i save the oil and its building up and thought it would be cool to burn it in the forge to offset LP cost.

You can go to local restaraunts and get used oil from them....

I see what you getting at.... still shouldn't be a problem except that most of the oil burner plans I have seen have the oil drip tube located in the center of th mouth of the burner. If your lp burner will work with that in the way then I'd still say go for it. It shouldn't be too much of a hassle to make up a test anyways, get another piece of burner pipe, fit it with an oil drip tube and fire away, if it works it works if not well you have another piece of burner tube for when you want to burn oil.

I can get 35 pounds of new oil from a local store for $20 that's enough fuel for 20+ hours of forging depending on your efficiencies and other variables. Mucho cheaper than lp around here.

one gal of veg oil has 130,000 btu and LP has 91,000. big diffrince. i did a test, took my forced air burner and put it at 20% air flow which is where i run it when i connect it to my one brick forge. and i held a paper about 3" away and driped oil in frount of burner. i got about a 3" spred on the paper. i then used a spoon and poured a stream and got the same. so there is plunty of air to break up the oil and send it into the forge. ill see if my one brick will run on oil :D

One thing that I do with my charcoal fired coffee can forge is drop some paraphin (candle chunks) onto the coals to "super charge" to take the temp over the top.

`Reminds me of wathching an after burner running with that three foot flame shootng of the "glory hole"! :D:D:D

Hey used oil may have a place in the knifemakers shop after all. I sure would like to see some pics of this when you get it worked out. I may have to try this myself.

A guy over on Don Fogg's forum built a waste oil forge, your propane/oil preheater burner idea sounds great Jarod.

You don't need that book, the burner is simple. It's a 2x17" piece of black pipe with a piece 1/4" black pipe entering at a 45 degree angle near the mouth of the burner and a blower at the other end. No fancy nipples or jets. No worrying if your fittings are leaking (well you may worry about stains.) Remember these burners are for foundries, not forges, so you have to back them down some.

I'm building one out of safety concerns mainly, my 9 yo daughter wants to try her hand at smithing and while I wouldn't leave her alone near the forge reducing the chances of explosion or other dangers sounds good to me.

Couple of things to consider, you may want to use a pump to give some pressure to your oil for injection through a small opening to allow you to meter it in better. Also consider warming the oil to make it more volitile which will help it burn quicker and cleaner. Both will help the air pick up the oil to go into the forge.

A pre heater on the oil is definately a must do,cold days leave the oil to thick to flow well and the warmed oil does burn better...If you google waste oil burners you will find some really neat stuff.I started to build me one for forge work a couple of years ago but that was when I got sick so it never got finished. You can get free oil from allot of restaurants and after a quick screening to get the big burn chuncks of stuff out it works great.
