Multi-tool for airline travel?

Greetings,

I am interested in carrying my Gerber multi-tool during air travel and am curious what experiences others have had with this.

I plan on either cutting off the knife blade with a Dremel tool or maybe just completely round the tip and grind off the cutting edge so it is just a mini pry bar.

The tool still has a nice set of fiskars mini scissors that I plan on leaving intact. Are little scissors still a no-no? Can I round the tips and make it legal?

After 911 the security regs and confiscations went to an absurd extreme. I assume they have lightened up a bit since then, but do not know this for sure.

I plan to check the TSA website for more info, but it is my impression that enforcement is not consistent across the country. In the good old days it was amazing the different realities of carrying a pocket knife despite identical laws.

What is the real-world experience of carrying multitools or tools of any kind during airline travel?

Thank you, TR

Pretty much any "tool" is prohibited, in addition to anything sharp/pointy (aside from giant knitting needles  ). Check this out:

That's as of 5/16/05. I've heard talk of the TSA considering allowing small knifes back in carry-on, but it is all still talk currently. Of course, you'll want to double check this info yourself before you try to get on a plane with anything of ambiguous legality.

Trout,

Thanks for the link. Looks like "no joy" on the multitool. I found a thread where some guy had his little multitool screwdriver bits with him and he was denied. No multitool, just those li'l bits. Common sense is too often set aside these days.

Cheers, TR
