The project is a ways off but thought I'd get a jump on it. I scored some rayskin this weekend, and that's one of my questions - was it as good a deal as I thought.
I got four rawhide rayskins for $50, each about 22" long. They are not colored, look natural in color, and stiff. The guy I bought them from said soak them and they'd lay right out.
o Was this a good price for four skins? (pun not intended
)
o If I have to work them wet, any suggestions how to keep my handles from rusting when forming the skins around them?
o How and when (before, during, after soak?) might one dye these skins?
o Does anyone know of any tutorials on the finish knot used by such makers as Steve Corkum? I have seen the traditional handle wrap tutorial, but would like to find out how to finish off the handle in the contemporary American manner.
o What sources for bulk cord and tape are there? This is something I'm not afraid of buying a lot of and would consider combining a larger order with someone else if interested.
Any and all ideas are welcomed!
Thanks,
Dave
