Multipurpose Vest

I am about to go travelling for a year around South East Asia and am trying to find a vest (one of those gillet things) with multiple pockets so that I can keep all of my essentials close to hand. Preferably it should not look overly military in styling and be available either in the UK or Canada.

Does anyone have any experience with such equipment and feel able to make some recommendations?

Thanks,

Andy

Check out Orvis at www.orvis.com

I have one of their vests (US$128.00) and one from Cabela's (US$49.00). The Orvis vest is better quality, but the Cabela's vest is the one I wear most often - probably because it's a bit lighter and looks more "travelled". In Canada, there's also Tilley (makers of those famous "Hey, look I'm a senior citizen!" hats, but I found their vests too "tailored" (read "stiff") and at C$329.00, just a bit over-priced.

I can heartily recommend ANYTHING from Orvis - and their Customer Service is simply OUTSTANDING.:D

I have one made by Woolrich that I like alot, and is reasonably priced too.

Wore one of these last summer in Central America - Very comfortable in hot climate, made of suplex nylon, light enough to be worn under a jacket, very practical design with an inside zippered pocket big enough to hold passport and plane tickets and very much a "civilian: look.

Mauri,

I don't know if Royal Robbins bettered their hook and loop closures but if they haven't I wouldn't buy that Royal Robbins vest.

I paid $75 for one of their zipp-off pants and while the pants are comfortable easy to wash/clean, light and strong the hook and loop closures on the pockets are absolute crap.
ALL and I mean every single "loop" patch on these pants has torn off, even from the leg "pouch" which gets used minimal.

The quality of the 'loop' (from hook&loop) patches is so bad that the sewing just frays the sides of the loop patches and the whole thing tears off and stays on the hook patch.

I have those pants for 2 years now and do not wear them continiously , I have 6 year old North face zip-off pants and have worn them a lot more then the Royal Robbins one and none of their hook and loop closures has torn so far.
I also have 'name-less' $20 zipp-off pants with hook and loop closures and no problem either with them.

So essentially I'm stuck with an pair of expensive Royal Robbins pants that doen't have closing pockets anymore and no guarantee whatso-ever I guess.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera
