I thought about putting this review in the General or Customs forum, but I only really hang out here in the Becker forum, so here it is!
I figure it fits here to some degree since I use the Patch knife paired with my BK9. Together they cover all my needs at home and in the field. Since we have plenty of reviews on the BK9, I will focus on his little buddy, the Patch Knife by T.M. Hunt.
**Mods, if you feel that this is not the appropriate place for this review, let me know and we can move it**
First, I'll start with the system I work with. I like to bring three knives with me when I am fully equipped. My large knife is a BK9, my mid range is a Hunter by Rick Hargis, and my small utility knife is a Patch knife by T.M. Hunt. The Patch does most of the work while the BK9 handles large jobs and the Hunter handles mostly food prep.
I have had the Patch knife for a little over a month. I decided to wait a while before posting a review so that I had more experience with it than just a weekend.
OAL of the knife is just over 7" and blade length is just over 3".
The steel is 01 heat treated to 56 rc. The finish on the steel is gun blue. Handle material is black micarta with brass pins.
First thing I noticed about the knife was how comfortable it is in hand. The swell in the butt of handle fits into my palm comfortably in any position that I hold the knife. Choking up on it is easy and allows for greater control.
First up was paper...can't say I am all that good at this one but this was after a lot of use and abuse with the knife. Still cut like a razor!
Then I moved on to some tougher paper, cardboard. Had a box to break down from the recent move so I got to slicin and dicin. Worked as well as a razor with little to no resistance as I sliced through the cardboard. I sliced both with the grain and against,
Next up I tried some wood. Skinned some bark, sort of managed a feather stick and cut some notches. All were accomplished quite easily, my skill level is the only thing to blame.
Last but not least, food prep. This pear was quite ripe and ready to be eaten. A dull knife would not do! After much cutting, slicing and abuse, the patch knife kept on going.
I really like this knife a lot. For the past couple years I have cycled through various small/utility knives to pair with my trusty BK9, but none have really stuck. The simplicity, affordability and toughness of the Patch knife has made me a fan. After over a month of use and abuse, the finish on the blade has hardly changed and the edge retention has been outstanding. I have sharpened it only one time on paper wheels in the month + I have had it. When I got this knife from TM Hunt, he told me to use it like it was free. This is a great motto for this knife because I abuse it more than any knife I have owned and it still looks and functions great. The only con I can think of for this knife is that it would probably not fair well as a pry bar. To me, this is not a con, I prefer to use my knives as knives and crowbars (or the BK9) for prying. I have done little to no upkeep on this knife and no rust or discoloration has formed. I even left it in a wet sheath for a few days and found it be no worse for wear.
I highly recommend the Patch knife by TM Hunt as a perfect companion to your larger knife whether it be a BK9, BK5, BK7 or whatever you prefer. I carry it constantly and I am not afraid to abuse it. It looks great and functions even better.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask, comments also welcome. Thank you Mr. Hunt for a fantastic knife!
