My Dad sharpened up his first knife on a Sharpmaker today! It was a Spyderco brand Centofante 4 folding wharncliffe pocketknife. I ground in the back-bevel for him with the diamond hones and cleaned it up with the mediums and then he followed the directions for sharpening with the forty degree setting. My Dad's first edge was shaving sharp. That was way too cool!

Congrats! My son is always thrilled when he tries to teach me something and I actually learn it.

Hmmmm....Come to think of it. I was always thrilled when I used to teach my dad stuff.

Thats fantastic! In my life it was the other way around. My dad used to sharpen his and the knives of his co-workers. All on what I grew up knowing as a whetrock. Medium/fine. I was about 9-10 years old when he said its time for you to learn how to sharpen a knife, boy. He had about a half dozen knives from work and had me sharpen them all freehand. All the work was done on the medium side then jack it up with light pressure on the fine side to remove the burr.
When one of his co-workers would ask him to sharpen their knife he would ask them, " Do you want to open cardboard boxes or shave the hair on your arm and impress your friends?" If it was open boxes he would give it what he called a working edge.
My dad is gone and I sure miss him alot. He was my mentor/buddy. Sometimes I think he forgot more than I'll ever know...but I don't give myself enough credit. Cherish your time with your father!

See? All this time you were thinking you'd developed this incredible sharpening skill through many, many hours of patient effort, trial and error -- turns out it's all in the genes! :D

Hillbilly.223,

Thanks for sharing that with me. That was very cool. I do cherish time spent with my Dad, but it can be difficult on election years. :o

Dog of War,

Making wretched puns is the legacy I've inherited from my Dad. People won't bury the hatchet with either of us because of the smart adze comments we've made.

That's something I like about you, Thom: you really call a speyed a speyed. :)

Congrats Thom! I would be thrilled if anyone that close to me learned how to sharpen.

Your old man kicked my first edge's ass right there! Plus, it will save you time in the future, though I know you enjoy sharpening anything and everything, so this may be cutting into your sharpening time.
