hieach,
jack
After a brief ownership period of two weeks I have one and only one criticism of the Sebenza design. This relates to the confusion that exists in the machining geometry underneath the clip. Before my piece arrived I envisaged the clip and lanyard would be removed and stored, to leave the clean pure design I had searched for. True enough the lanyard has been removed but the clip will have to stay attached. Reason for this is the pig's ear that has been created from the initial clean lines, by adding overlapping machine cuts as after thoughts.
cutout
The attached scan shows the areas that bother me.
Hole 4 has been there from the start. Good hole I like it. Could not have the integral lock without it.
Profiled recess 2. Added for pocket clip. Nice touch, would probably not interfere with hole 4 chamfer if left alone, but added clearance 3 is needed for correct clip seating. Starts to compete for space with hole 4 chamfer.
Lastly material thickness for preloading the sprung member is considered too thick even with the hidden W machined to relieve thickness on the inside. Further material is removed under the clip, feature 1. This now leaves the surface at 5 totally confused. Is it a hole chamfer, a clip cutout or a feature to control spring stress. The answer is all of them and it looks crap. A consequence of adding afterthoughts together instead of good up front design. Everything else superb
This concludes the voting for the English Jury.

I agree, Tink. The clip is an integral part of the Sebenza, and if you remove it, even with the accessory recess cover, it looks "crap" as you say. Too, the tip of the clip leaves a shiny spot where it contacts the arm of the integral lock, and unless you have it sandblasted again it leaves a cosmetic flaw.
Someone posted here recently with some photos of clipless Sebenzas that looked as if they never had one.
I personally would like to have the option to purchase a clipless version; I don't know if that is possible?
I carry my Sebenzas in sheaths or pouches rather than with clip in pocket carry as the titanium slabs tend to get beat up pretty badly with keys, coins, etc, so the clip for me is superflous.
Until we are offered a clipless version, the best solution is to leave it on.

This all evolved from the addition of the clip to the Sebenza and the requested modifications to the clip as years went by. If the design had remained clipless (as the Good Lord intended), there would be no problems.

It is all the clip-users fault!

I feel your pain!

The model you got is the one with the additional cutout under the clip. Without this, the lines are MUCH cleaner. Her a picture of mine with the clip removed.

I suggest you trade the SIQ (scale in question) with someone who likes the clip and leaves it on.

I wonder if yours was a first production one or some sort? As you can see by mine (sorry for the fuzzy pics) The cutout area is not in the same place on mine.

Here is the same pic with the clip insert in place.

I believe that Davis has a small Sebenza. On the large the clip cutout clears the locating hole. (Say that three times fast!)

It's the one part of the Sebenza that pales in comparison to the others. Which, to be fair, are flawless in design, execution and function.

You're right James, the small one has the locking bar hole further to the end, I just checked my classic version.

But that strikes me as strange, why does the small Sebenza need an additional cutout under the clip? The titanium scales are thinner than on the large version and they seem easy enough to move. Don't they have the cutout on the inside of the bar anymore?

Ralf,

The cutout was a measure to add more room under the clip, since discontinued because of the redesigned clip. I'm glad they found another solution as well.

Hi each
jack

I now accept it is my fault for choosing a small (afterthought) Sebenza, instead of the original. BTW, can anyone post a scan of my typewith the clip insert. I think it would be even more disjointed with the small sebenza machined profile, but if it is better, then I will make a purchase.
