Before I start rambling I first want to introduce myself. I have visited the HI forum and webpage before and have always found it interesting. I did not buy a khukuri until recently though because I am a starving college student and do not yet have the budget to buy these beautiful knives. Recently though, I have found myself constantly visiting the forum and yearning to buy myself a khukuri of my very own. Luckily my birthday is this month and that was just the reason I needed to spoil myself with a little gift.
For my first khukuri I chose the BAS. I know the rest of you feel that the 15" AK is king, but I am only 5'9" and 140 lbs. I knew that before I tried to run, I had better learn to walk. Once I become accustomed to using the BAS, then I will trade up and get me an AK.
I have to admit that although I found all the threads on the forum interesting, I was still a bit skeptical. How can I knife be that great? Receiving and unwrapping my khukuri answered that question easily. It was the most beautiful knife that I have ever seen. The polish on it was great, and the engraving was better than I ever expected considering this knife is completely hand-made. I have not used it yet, but I know that I will have fun when I do.
I now know what you guys meant when you used the term junk khukuri. I have a couple that I bought from a cutlery catalogue, and they just don't compare. My old khukuris are only about 1/2 the thickness of my BAS, the polishing is third rate, the scabbard is shoddy, and the karda and chakma are flimsy to put it nicely. My BAS makes them look anemic in comparison.
Unfortunately I think I may have opened up a Pandora's Box. This diagnosis may be premature, but I think that my symptoms show that I am in the early stages of HIKV. I find myself thinking of how many khukuris I will be able to buy each year. 1 per quarter plus 1 for my Birthday and 1 for Christmas. Somebody help me!!!
