alright, this is my second post, i'm new here.
i'm 15 and have recently developed an interest in knives, i was going to get some 5160 from a spring shop, but it was closed, so dad gave me an old knife of his (kitchen sorta knife, it was weird) which he bought 20 odd years ago and never used.
so basically i butchered that and made this, it's some kind of carbon steel, and is extremely hard because of the heat-treating i guess, i destroyed a brand new drill bit doing the hole for the pin going through the scales, and the hardware shop was closed so i just left it at that.

okay, so it's made of:
'usa made tru edge ontario knife' carbon steel
rimu scales, yet to be oiled
and a bit of welding rod for the pin.

i grinded the hell out of it, pics don't really do it justice, but i'm no knife photographer.

blade may look scratched as hell, but it's super smooth, i didn't really feel like spending another 2 hours with the file on it.
hope you like it! in future i'll probably make a leather sheath for it, when i can source some leather.
also, i've got a gerber big rock camping knife on the way, are they any good?
i've not heard much bad about them, they seem to be a fairly good company.

Ah!!!! What a coincidence, I just posted a review on this:

In otherwords, no this knife is not great. For a while it did it's job, until you make it actually do something hard. Bad blade steel. Very poor company. Gerber supposedly went downhill fast.

So there. Now you've heard something bad about them and that knife specifically.

Edit: Are you going to put another pin in there? Because right now it looks like you have a pivot

i might put in another pin if i can be bothered getting another bit.
i epoxied it down pretty hard, it was done mainly on impulse (making it)
and hmm, the gerber doesn't sound so good now :(

I hope you are getting a lot of good opinions about his one. you kinda remind me of me when I first started...not that it was very long ago. anyways, the knife looks good for a first step, but please continue, and don't be afraid to ask questions to me or anybody.

nice work,

Brook

I'm assuming your doing some reading on the Makers forum here , there is lots and lots of advice , hours of reading.

To be honest it looks crude ,but effective - I'm sure it will cut , just not win a beauty contest. :)

The great thing is , you've went and done something that you now know you can do yourself , your skill can go as high as you want it to and , being 15 you have many years to learn and grow.

If you are interested there are some pretty decent knife kits available here.
Knife kits and materials used in making knives.

Enjoy your new hobby bro ! :)

yea, it is a bit crude, it feels nice though.
and it's very sharp.
i don't really want to order a kit, i'll try and get hold of some good steel though, there are plenty of places to get it from.
thanks for the comments.

I like it. FWIW---use a bigger tang pin and why the recurve? The duty finish is a favorite. Thanks!

hey for a first knife looks great. Some suggestions...next time for pins go to a local welding supply shop and buy a rod of unfluxed brass brazing rod and use for pins(thats where I get my brass pinning stock) and once you get better at the blade making aspect I have seen some awsome looking wood come out of your part of the world!!

i couldn't find any brazing rod that was thicker than about a millimetre.

lycosa, i just liked the look of the recurve design, so i tried it to see how it worked.
it makes it harder to sharpen though.
thanks for the feedback.
