My first customs!

I'm having my first two real customs made soon! Well, maybe not, but only on technicalities...I do own a Simonich Cetan Tanto, although it is the closest thing he makes to a production knife, plus it was a kit...anyway, these other two are also kits, coming from MadPoet, and will both have D-2 blades. One is an 11" camp, survival type knife w/ 6" blade and a blade somewhere between that of a bowie and an Americanized tanto, while the other is a small, fixed version of the Chniese Utility shape being popularized by Bob Lum. Anyway, I am psyched to get them, and will post pictures whenever possible...I'll take a lot more time on these than I did on the Cetan, just because that was my first project knife and I went nuts trying to get it done...

I have not had the chance to handle any of the MadPoet's knives yet, but if they come close to reflecting the character of the person I have gotten to know a little, I am willing to bet you will be very pleased. I know of a bunch of folks who are real happy with his knives. Check out the new Knives Illustrated giveaway knife - it is Mel's. I also like your choice of D2 for a camp knife. Let us know how it does for you.

I will post pictures when they are finished, although that may take a ahile as I intend to make these look really nice. Mel uses mostly D-2, so I thought it was a logical choice...we'll see how they perform. Mel's knives look great on his website, and he obviously puts a lot of effort into the ergonomics, so I am sure I'll be very happy! I'll let you know!

Chiro75 I think you did the right thing in getting Mels knives. I sure do like the look of them, and I get a kick out reading his posts. I hope to get one of his folders when my wallet gets a litter fatter. What kind of guards, handles, pins, file work or any other work are you planning to do to the knives, Chris.

ToTKnives, I was originally planning on something very simple, but the more I think about it the more I want to challenge myself. I am on a limited budget, so the original idea was to get a couple of fine kit blades, as I have a bunch of handle materials from non other than Kit Carson... the more I think about it, however, the more fancy I want these things to be. Unfortunately, I am a very impatient person. While I would love to pay Mel extra for file work and other cool stuff, I simply don't have it in my budget to do so. I suppose I could let him grind the blades, then have them sent to me to do the filework myself, then send them bacl for heat treating, but that would take SO long! Arggg! We'll see. Otherwise, I was planning on using some G-10 or Micarta scales I have, possibly with carbon fiber inlays or "bolsters". I dunno. Mel is shipping the knives with stainless steel pins and wood scales, so I may use those. I'll have to see the knives before I make any final decisions as far as the handles go. Maybe I'll contact him today about the filework. It adds a lot to the knife, and I suppose if it is doable myself, that it may be worth the extra week or so it puts on the project...we shall see!

Chiro75,
You didn't go wrong with Mel and his Madpoet knives. The medium skinner(I believe it was near the bottom of p2 on his web page gallery) with the dessert ironwood is MINE! He is graciously making me a companion knife for caping/boning with matching ironwood to take residence in a COMBO sheath of my pending design with the skinner and a pocket for a sharpening stone. The ultimate "MADPOET CAMP SET" It will be my 3rd madpoet and Yes, I am proud!
Mel's D2 and his grind is vvvvery sharp! I've been using my current two around the kitchen and the balance and "cutability" is superb.
I can't picture these with file work tho.
File if you want to, but these suckers are made to CUT!
Mel is a gentleman and it is a pleasure to do business with him.
