I mean my first real fixed blade I carry. Forgot to post this.
Got my cold steel kobun, in the Aus8 as some of you have read. This knife is sharp, its held together well. I use it mostly at work, and carry when I feel comfortable. I bought this mostly cause I wanted a tough fixed blade that could take abuse, within smaller size. I haven't abused this yet, but I would feel more comfortable if I had bought the carbon instead. Other carbon V knife I have hasn't failed yet. In good shape too.
So my kobun serves its main purpose, its sharp, and cuts what I need. Would I trade for a carbon version? Yes, probably. Strength was one factor I wanted in a knife, don't know how well it Aus 8 would hold up under stress..not as much as carbon I think.
Mostly I learned, if you don't have the money yet..don't settle. Save and wait. That and trial and error. No bladeshops around here, so have to look at pics, order, and trade/sell what I don't like. Did that with many swords.
