Well,I'm showing off my new rifle. It's a 1969 L579 Sako Forester Deluxe in 243 win. What scope do you guys suggest for this little beauty.I like them low and I'm partial to Leupold so I'm thinking a 2-7 or 2.5-8 power.I've just got to deal with that massive rear sight. They don't make them like this anymore folks.

i recently purchased a very similar sako l-579 in .243. mine isn't as nice a version as yours. i put a spare scope on it-pentax
4.5x14,but i haven't gotten around to shooting it as of yet. let us know how it shoots and what load it likes.

Nikon 3.3-10X44 AO Mildot reticle :)

Actually a B&L Balvar would be nice on that rifle. I had a Forester HB in .243 that wore a 6-24 B&L.
Zeiss makes some nice ones in the 1" Amercian line.

Leupold are nice, I have owned quite a few and own 2 right now. I just like to pick and choose, there are lots of nice scopes to be had.

What ring-base combo did you use on your Forester? I have Leupold ringmounts on my Sako 75 but when I tried them on this rifle I found that the dovetail bases are smaller than on the 75.The Leupold ringmounts will only get tight if placed at the very end of the dovetail. I have a set of two piece Optilocks that will work but they are very heavy, higher than they need to be even in low,and the screws are extremly soft.

It has been too many years and too many guns through my hands to remember. Though I suspect they were Optilocks as I remember that name and I only had 2 or 3 Sakos over the years. That thing was amazingly accurate. My uncle ended up with it when the divorce came and money was scarce, doubt I will ever get that one back! LOL!

I haven't seen one of those older SAKOs for a long time, but I believe that the rear sight has screws holding it to the barrel. Why not remove it and fill the holes with plug screws?

IMHO, people seem to think bigger is better. A 2 to 7 power scope would be just fine.

I'm pretty sure the base of the rear sight and also the front sight are soldered on.The rear blade is simple to remove though.I don't think they will give me any trouble.I agree,a small light weight scope is what I'll use.I just want some nice mounts that don't weigh as much as the scope. My two piece Optilocks are extremly heavy.

That's a beautiful rifle! I don't know if they will fit but have you looked at the Burris signature series scope rings? They have a self aligning insert that puts even pressure all around the scope. Put a set on my sons gun and he really likes them.

On size/magnification- My suggestion was a little higher as .243 is commonaly used both for game and varmints. My 7mm08 wears a Nikon Monarch 2-7 and my sons 260 Rem wears a Leup 2.5-8 so I agree on your size range. I did a little checking and my Forester HB came with Sako rings.

Beautiful rifle and I hope you find something that works well for you.

I think that beauty deserves something nice sitting on top of it. You could go with a Leupold like you said, or maybe a 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest.

A rifle like this deserves some really nice rings that complement the lines of a classic rifle. Take a look @ Conetrol mounts out of Seguine, Texas. They are beautiful rings and have blued models that are super. A compact VX-3 may be short enough that the rear sights may not be an issue. It's worth consideration.

I keep going back to Conetrol when I look at options. I might go that route as soon as I figure out what scope I want and can use.It will likely be the VX3 2.5-8.I've got to go and try one out.I just hope the folks at Conetrol will be able to get the correct height for bolt clearence.I would think objective clearence would be easy but I'm a little concerned about correct bolt clearence on a set of $200 mounts.
