I stopped in at a local gunshow and found this little Eye brand canoe in carbon steel. It was used, a bit rusty and gritty, but had only been sharpened maybe a couple of times.
I lathered it in wd 40 and took a brass brush to it and scrubbed away the rust. There was one tiny spot of pitting that I had trouble with so it had to be carefully sanded away. Lost some of patina that way.
After a good soap and water scrubbing I dried it off then gave it a full mineral oil bath soak for two days.
After that, I took it to the stones for a good sharpening. I reground the edges to around 16 degrees. After finishing on the waterstones, it was off to the strop and flexcut gold compound. I must say, the carbon steel sharpens up much quicker than my stainless ones.
It's a good knife and I got it at a nice price. I like the swedges and long pulls. It has a composite handle. I'm not usually a fan of those, but it feels pretty nice in the hand. The canoe pattern is really handy. I had picked up a cheap RR canoe just to see if I liked the pattern. I do, and now that I have this I think I will toss the RR.
Only real flaw in this treasure is a tiny gap between the liner and backspring. Not a big deal. I'm not sure you can see it in the picture.
I think Eye brand knives are great and I'm happy to have another. (my other Eye is a whittler).
Off into my EDC rotation it goes!
