My SnG review

Well after much debate as to whether to get the RJ Martin Avenger or a Strider SnG, I went for the SnG and I must say I F*CKIN$ LOVE IT! This after only having owned it for one day. It usually takes me a week or two to figure out whether or not a new knife is a keeper or one to sell or trade. This one I knew immediately would be my new EDC.

I purchased the knife from Matt D in Alexandria VA, who BTW is only like 20 miles from me, and is HIGHLY recommended from me, he is a pleasure to do do business with and will be my new dealer of choice. It sures saves on the shipping costs.

Anyway enough of the plug for Matt :D :D ,back to the review. He let me pick from three different ones and I settled on # 69. All three were third production run and all had slight differences. I.E., different thumb lugs/back stops, stamps or pivot screws. Mine was VERY stiff brand new but it had the best centered blade of the bunch and the best lockup, so I went with it.

The lockup was EXTREMELY tight brand new and if the blade was slapped open at a fast rate it became so locked that I couldn't get it to disengage even with two hands! I had to pry it loose with a nickel and promptly called Matt. He informed me that this was common and would ease up when the knife got broken in. He also said I can help speed the process if I scratch a # 2 pencil on the tang of the blade at the point when the lock engages. This worked beautifully and the lockup now is rock solid. The lock travels over far enough to the point where the left side of the lock is even with the blade and is VERY easy now to close with one hand.

The action of the blade had been a little slower to break in then the lock up. I hear it can take a while to break in completely but when it does it is oh so sweet! I have done the normal cutting tests with it so far, paper cut, tomato slice, wood whittling and a few hard swipes at some tall weeds in the woods behind my home. It passed all tests flawlessly ( like I even had to check, one draw across the back of my hand sent little hairs flying! ) The weeds were about two inch diameter with a celery like center, they looked like they had been sliced with a razor. After a few hard foward thrusts into a tree stump I was sold. No slippage at all and an uncanny confidence that there would be none no matter how hard one thrust it.

The grip feels awesome, it is very ergonomic and feels like it becomes part of your hand. I also like the look of the black G-10 with the black blade. The Ti side is cool too though mine doesn't have very dramatic colored stripes they are more indiscrete which I like. All in all I love this knife and am very happy with my purchase. Do I think it is worth $400? HELL YEAH! This knife is indestructable and will keep cutting where others knives might fail in similar situations. You can't put a price on that if you are in a situation where this is your ONLY knife. :) :) :) :p :p :p

BTW I still want that RJ Martin Avenger too as well as the new MT Terzoula Matt let me fondle. Man that is a SWEET auto!

Nice review and congratulations! My SnG seems to make it into my pocket more so than any other folder.

Hey Dennis...I have # 70 of the last batch...where practicly related...:p :D

Congrats on the SnG...i love mine more every day...

I've got #50 of the first batch and I couldn't agree more. Knew it was my new EDC from fresh out of the box. Got mine from Matt too. I had read on the former Strider forums about the lock break-in, and it is now fully broken in and awesome. Just keep flickin' it and you'll soon be in smoothville.

Very nice review, I have been thinking about picking one up, I may have to just bite the bullet and buy one.

Held off for years on buying a Strider (all the "hype" turned me off). Finally ordered an SnG just to see first hand what all the fuss was about. Opened the package and it was love at first sight! (in fact, I ordered an AR the same day.)

I'll be happy to admit it - I'm a Strider convert! (but I still hate listening to all the gushing Strider 'happy talk' )

Strider Stonewashed #51, I carry it more than all of my knives combined. Excellent quality, fit and finish, you'll never regret buying it.

the SnG is one of my favs, though out of my price range as a lowly apprentice :p. great review and hopefully one day i'll be able to grab myself one :).

Matt D is the man...I just got mine from him on Sat. #67! I love it...it's everything I asked for in knife.

I bought my Strider all-black SnG from Matt as well. It's number 61. Nice review. I just wanted to add a couple of things. I like the way the handle can be worked in two positions with your index finger in one of two choils. When pinched up on the blade, it felt a litte awkward at first, but I've grown to like the solid grip. Reverse grip, with your thumb over the wide base of the handle is especially solid. The SnG is a very impressive knife, not nearly as large as I had thought. Really, the correct size for a serious pocket folder. It is also the sharpest knife, out of the box, I've ever purchased. And, like Dennis, I feel the knife is well worth the $400 price tag. I really dig this knife! In fact, I had Matt add me to his waiting list for the next generation Tiger Stripe SnG.

One down side - and I've read about this on the old Strider Forum Archives - the smell is terrible. Some seem to like it, but my wife banned the SnG from the house after it stunk up the office like a machine shop. Honestly, it was like someone had changed a set of gears in the room. Instead of parking the knife outside (rust and theft concerns), it now lives in a plastic bag on the book shelf. Any thoughts on getting rid of the stink? Or, are you guys just plopping this thing in your pocket and watching everyone plug their nose? (LOL)

Thanks ...

I just bought an AR and it came with the Eau d'Parfum d'Machine Shop as well. I washed it in a mild degreaser (read Dawn dishwashing soap) dried it well and relubed it. The smell is still there but much milder. Before, every time I held the knife my hands came away with the smell of machine oil.

I've had mine for about six months, and despite a bit of initial problem with the lock (which Mick was very quick to put right), it is one of the best investments I've made. The SNG has barely been out of my pocket in all that time.

The odd thing is that I have other knives of a similar price and they only get light duty for fear of marring them, the SNG on the other hand usually gets the jobs that I would be reluctant to do with my cheepest EDC.
I was told prior to buying it that once held it is imediatly obvious the SNG was buit to be used. I thought this was a very odd thing to say, but once it is in the hand the statement makes total sence, hard to explain, but true.

great review! ...always wanted one! What was that about the other two having less-than centered blades???

My blade is off a little but it doesn't seem to be a problem. Mine locks up nice, tight and straight...so the offness of the blade doesn't have any effect...that I have noticed thus far. Why was there an issue with the blade being off?

Nicky,
All three of the ones I looked at had slightly off-centered blades, nothing that would affect the performance of the knife. This is easily fixed as well.
