Hello,
Just got it in the mail today. Wow, what a great looking knife. I got a Black-T, Tanto bladed one, #207. First thing I tried was the Wave feature....umm...didn't work. hehe. Guess the knife needs some breaking-in.
Second thing I did was to loosen the main pivot screw. That helped a bit.
Then I decided, what the heck, and dismantled the knife. What suprised me that is was so easy and the parts were so simple! I followed the advise of HC Leo

about backing-off the second ball detent, lubed the knife with Break-free (hope thats ok?!) and put is back together. Now, it works silky smooth. The wave feature works like a charm and I can even flick the blade open with my wrist.
A couple of questions...
1. When adjusting the main pivot screw, should it be tight enough that the blade should have NO play when open or closed?
2. I noticed on the the right side G10 handle (the side where the clip is) that there is a bit of "scarring" of the G10 handle. One or two shallow, small gouges/abrasions plus a few "shiny" spots. Should I be upset or is this "normal"?
3. The main pivot screw's black finish seemed worn-off, right out of the box. It was actually the first thing I noticed. I'd probably remove it and spray it with flat-black paint anyways.

Don't get me wrong, I think the knife is just plain awesome... just thought the QC and fit-and-finish would be a bit better being a "semi-custom" knife, and the price.
Thanks again guys.

oops...sorry for the HTML screw-up. My excuse...it is 3 am here in Manila Philippines....hehe.

I JUST RECIEVED MY CQC7 WAVE BLACK T AND GREEN G-10 AND THERE ARE NO FLAWS WITH THE KNIFE AT ALL. VERY SMOOTH KNIFE. YOU WANT TO TIGHTEN THE PIVOT SCREW JUST ENOUGH SO IT DOES NOT TOUCH THE SIDES WHEN CLOSED, BUT AT THE SAME TIME THERE TO BE NO PLAY IN THE BLADE WHEN OPENED. YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK AT IT AND TRY IT A COUPLE OF TIMES. I HAD TO DO THIS WITH MY SOCFK BUT NOT WITH MY CQC7 WAVE. IF THE SCREW IS TIGHTENED TO MUCH IT WILL TOUCH THE TITANIUM WHEN CLOSED........BEST TO TIGHTEN WHEN CLOSED AND SEE HOW IT WORKS FOR YOU

Allan -

With regard to the Wave not working: that happened to me as well. The honorable Don Rearic posted a reply in a recent thread of mine which solved my wave problem, and I am now happily "drawing mmy knife from the pocket" every day! I quote (AHEM!):

Surefire Wave Activation.
Everyone that ever had a problem with opening a Commander, this always worked and they adopted the "Tech."

The knife has to be dragged out horizontally. You need some pressure. Take it easy though on the rearward speed, hard on the pockets and the knife. You will get the hang of it very soon.

The "Index" I use and teach people is to curl your index finger around the end of the pocket clip. This not only gives you a muscle memory index, it acts as an anchor for your draw so your hand never slips. The feeling would almost be like the end of the pocket clip that curves upward, is almost like a trigger with your fingertip curled "around" it.

Hope that helps, Allan! Have fun with it!

As for tightening/loosening the pivot screw, I didn't bother. The knife was a bit stiff when I took it out of the box, but after opening and closing it a couple of hundred times in the first hour or so that I had it, it was fine.

Like I said in another post.. the SOCFK that I recently purchased made me love my Commander even more. My SOCFK is great and all, but my Commander's blade to handle ratio and the weight and all is just perfect. I don't even have to try to open my commander, it just smoothly catches my pocket and opens up. My SOCFK requires more pressure to the wave and more speed. My SOCFK also isn't as loose as my Commander.. but I have been carrying my Commander 4 months longer than my SOCFK.

It'll loosen up and the wave will be a breeze.

See2,
Yup, I think I also read that thread about how to use the end of the pocket clip to train my muscle memory. That technique really works! Funny thing is I was practicing while wearing a pair of baggy cargo shorts and, while practicing the wave technique, the blade somehow caught on the flap of the cargo pocket...hehe...that blade is SHARP! Well, better the flap than a finger.
What about the quality control issues guys? Is this normal?
Thanks again

I had the same problem with my tanto SOFCK-it was just plain stiff. I got a spearpoint SOFCK that was perfect. I never did the slick up on the tanto, though. I have just found that I could not give up my Commander. For me the Commander is just the absolute ideal daily carry knife. Both SOFCK's are now in the big black Emerson case. I have found that the nice thing about EKI knives is that they are totally owner serviceable and maintainable. Disassmbly is actually almost encourged. I don't really think that the tightness on the blades is neccesarily a QC issue. Keep in mind if the opening is setup nice and easy, you could get a situation where the blade closes real easy as well....a new owner with an easy closer can cause those self inflicted injuries that lawyers love. I like the idea that I can adjust the tension on the blade to MY liking, and not the person who happened to assemble it. Just my .02 cents.

Hello nyeti,
I think you misunderstood me about the QC issues. I was not complaining about the tightness when opening the blade but about the scarring/abrasions/small gouges on the G10 handle. I figured that a knife that costs this much should be "flawless" when new. Thanks.

My SOCFK came about 5 minutes ago. Green Blade #36. The perfect carry knife. It satisfies all of my needs for a small, light wieght, yet very functional knife. Needless to say I love it. This is also my first real EMK. I say real because I picked up a Raven with custom micarta handles a little while ago. Well, time to go play.

Alan:
The knife should be flawless in this respect G-10 can take a beating without any scarring. Send the knife back.

Here are the pics and the QC probs I was talking about...

Notice the main pivot screw that the black coating has almost worn off. This was the condition when I removed the knife from the box.

Now, on the right side, the G10 scales had a bit of scarring. I'm not sure if it is noticable on the pic, but I think you can see some pitt marks near the main pivot and around the clip. The clip also had a bit of scratches.
I know that these are purely cosmetic and does not interfere with the function of the knife but I was expecting a "flawless" finish from a brand new knife...plus for the amount I paid for it.
I called Extreme Outfitters but Steve was unavailable. They said that he would probably be back after the New Year.
So now all I can do is go back to wearing my Spyderco until I get to talk to Steve (don't want to damage the knife). The knife now sits in the original box. I look at it from time to time then return it inside the box. Sigh.....

I got mine in pristine condition. Either that or I was never really worried that much, but I think it is actually almost perfect. Your pivot screw looks my commander's. My SOCFK however has a good pivot screw this time, the black doesn't show any sign of ever wearing off any time soon. If you're that concerned about the screw then you can call up Emerson and they will send you a new one probably. Derek said they had a batch of 'defective' ones.
