My Svord Peasant Folder arrived today. My initial impressions are mostly positive. after adjusting the screws to my liking and fiddling with it for a while i am comfortable opening and closing it with one hand.

the handle is a lot longer than i like for an EDC knife so i probably wont carry it. the finish on the handle is kind of bleh, uninteresting stained wood. the bevel on the handle hasn't been sanded enough, it's quite rough in spots. It is fairly comfortable to hold.

The blade is a good length at about 3 1/16". The blade is an excellent shape and has a flat grind where there is no coating so it looks like the coating was put on before the blade was given it's grind. The edge of the blade is sharp but not extremely sharp. The edge feels like it was put on hastily, it could do with a few minutes on the sharpener but it comes with a usable edge.

It feels safe to use. The tang will prevent it from closing on your hand while you are using it.

Over all i like it. for the price, $18, i couldn't ask for anything more from it. I have seen similarly priced knives that couldn't come close to this one.

I got mine 10+ years ago and when the humidity was high I noticed it was hard to open and close the blade. After the handle dried out I took it apart and put several coats of Tru Oil on the wood and that solved the problem by sealing the wood. I was not sure how to carry it. I ended up with a cordura pocket flap sheath that could be worn horizontally. I cut part of the flap off, so the tang could stick out, but the knife would not fall out and wore the sheath on my right side with the tang forward. I could bring my hand forward, openening the flap, and extracting the knife with one motion and then thumb the blade open. Worked pretty well. John

Take it out and use it Freedom, that's when it grows on you....if it's going to :-)

That blade will sharpen up like a razor, the finish is a bit basic but that is standard,
yours looks just as I'd expect. they are pretty easy to pimp, some people put new handles on them, though I've never bothered myself.

I'll just break out the bedazzler and make it sparkle :D

i'll probably just sand out the rough spots, maybe round out the bevel too, and give the tru oil a try per john's suggestion.

thanks guys,

Very nice. Put a good edge on and try to cut some wood with it. You will see when Brian Baker does some of the best carbon steel in the business.
On a side note, be careful about the bottom screw. It works it self loose. That's how i lost mine. Enjoy the knife.

God Bless

Took over 100 strokes on the sharpmaker but it's now got a good razor sharp edge on it. it shaves paper and the hair on my arm quite well now. out of the box it wouldn't touch the hair on my arm and left paper jagged.

That is unusual. They normally come with a pretty good edge as standard. I've got 4 now and all could have been used to shave or darn near it. They are great slicers, try using it in the kitchen. One of the best things about them is here in the UK they just, only just mind you, are within the law for legal carry. 3" non locking blade. Some say they are just over that, but not according to my ruler and the law says ' actual cutting edge'. I'll take a chance anyway and say they are legal, if they want to go in front of a jury over 1mm they can. It's one hell of a cutter for a legal carry knife. You can always grind the blade down a fraction if it bothers you.

just running my thumb over the edge i could tell it wasn't razor sharp. when cutting paper the blade would get caught and just tear the paper. if it didn't get caught the cut wasn't clean.

I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to sharpening so that could be why it took so long to get the edge as sharp as i like it.

I live in the US so locking blades are legal to carry most places, the blade length won't be an issue in my state either. however i still need to find the right pocket for it, i can't carry it in my right front pocket because it's too big and denies access to my wallet. i don't like something that big in my back pockets. maybe cargo pants are the answer for this one.

That is a neat looking knife. I have never seen one like it before.

I did a little digging after i first saw this knife a week or so ago on these forums.

The basic design is called a friction folder. it has no lock or backspring. the scales pressing against the blade and your hand over the tang keep the knife open. as long as you are holding the knife properly there is no way it can close on your hand.

This model is made by a New Zealand company called Svord. They based their design on a 400 year old european design. you can read more on their website. http://www.svord.com

These make great gifts - I've given away about 5 or 6 of 'em already.

i got mine today.Wow, its bigger than I expected. Fit was good but finish was so-so... After 7 minutes of sand paper and whetstone, spine was smoothed out to acceptable as was handle. After lansky and then stropping, this thing cuts hair off your arm like laser. The plastic feels surprisingly comfortable.

Looks like real winner :D
