"can you take me higher?!?!"
Since noone really wanted to talk about the subject I guess I had to do some legwork on my own.. though I woudl share
The subeject at hand is how can you differentiate a Bali-song cutlery, a Pacific Cutlery, or a Benchmade knife??
easy: documentation or dated receipt.
but we dont have that luxury a lot of times...
First of all the last is easy. The tang stamp behind the butterfly says "Benchmade USA", if it says "made in USA" then it was made during the short 2 or so year era when BM was in Hollywood and not in Oregon.
Now what abou; Pacific cutlery? Is your knife is tang stamped (behind the butterfly) with us pat reg numbere 328903u239483240 and all that stuff then it is pacific cutlery.
Now here's the kicker. How can you differntiate a (pre pacific cutlery) "Bali-song cutlery" with a CUSTOM Benchmade? because they are both stamped "Bali-Song USA"
First of all I thin the handles (assuming they are stainless) of the balisong cutlery are heftier and if you do not think me crazy, 'feel' denser. Besides documentation you can first check the tang pin. Smaller the diameter then it is BS cutlery. Another dfead giveaway is the smaller acid etched butterfly and sometimes the lack of a registered trademark or copyright symbol next to the butterfly (c) or (r).
Also check out, if you can the actual handle pins. if your knife is worn enough the 'hidden' pins show up. The smaller they are it means it is BS.
(btw an authetic BS cutlery knife can go against these rules as I was informed that BS cutlery's later knives modified per these revisions before they 'became' (i use the term lightly ofcourse to those keeping track) PC)
just for some info, Ken LArgin of Kelgin knives was hired by BM to act as a consultant. He suggested the bigger tang pins and bigger handle pins.
There are some things I still want to know though. I doubt it, but do brass handles connote a BS cutlery? It shoudl be no problem to commision a CUSTOM BM balisong with brass handles right?
secondly.. did Pacific Cutlery make custom balisongs? Jeff imada says 'yes'. But my question woudl be, how were they tang stamped behind the butterfly?
and for the million dollar question if anyone got this far and read my useless boring post, what if the tang stamp (butterfly) is not on the tang but actually ON the blade??
Thank yo and good night. THanks for reading. Please feel free to bang my head to the wall and correct me if I am wrong.. I appreciate it
