My try at aniline dye for stag.

Here my try at aniline dye for stag. The color was Burnt Orange and it soaked for about a week. You mix the dye with alcohol so it penetrates well and dries pretty quick. The spec's on the knife are O1 steel hardened to 58/59 rockwell(file tested),nickel silver hilt and butt cap and fiber spacers. On a side note Ive been trying to find a rasp to create the slot for the tang and couldent find the size I needed so I bought a pack of jig blades and took 4 of them and slightly migged them together and then migged that to a handle it works real well for creating keyhole slots. http:www.homestead.com/hvknives/files/rodfull.jpg

Did you bend the stick on that thing or is your cap just for looks?

By stick,do you mean "tang"? No the stick is not bent,as for the thing,the cap is cosmetic and functional. Cosmetic because it looks nice and functional because the open end of the stag would not do well without protection. The tang goes into the handle a little more than half way. Its barbed and set with potting. The cap has a inch long post that is also barbed and set with epoxy.

Sorry....yes I meant the tang. Bad habit, I consider full tangs tangs and stick tangs....well "Sticks". I was just wondering. I've done it both ways but I would play hell drilling the hole for that amount of curve.

One of the things I learned at the Campbell school was to make a scraper for the inside of wood or stag. It's just a hook on the end of a piece of hardenable steel.

I already made something like that and it worked ok,but the advantage you have with the multiple jig blades is that it cuts very accurate you can add or subtract blades and you have multiple teeth cutting instead of one. If you dont have a mig I'm suer you could solder one as well. Just use the jig blades with about 5 to 7 tpi.

The advantage of the scraper is they can be curved. If you are able to get two holes to meet (front and rear) you can use the scrapers to carve a good curve. If the handle is wood you can use a curved steel rod heated in the forge to burn the initial hole and clean out and elongate with the scrapers. They are a lot of work though.
